Digital Chocolate launches DChoc Cafe series

Digital Chocolate announced the release a new social networking series of games called DChoc Café, reports Wireless Week.

Games in the series allow players to create personalized characters to experience the cafés. They can then form their own exclusive cafés and invite their friends, or visit the settings created by others. Bonus points, which are rewarded to players for playing well or for competing against other cafés, can be used to unlock bonus items. The first five games in the series are DChoc Café Sudoku, DChoc Café Kakuro, DChoc Café Hold’em Poker, DChoc Café Mahjong and DChoc Café Solitaire.

“The introduction of the DChoc Café Series combines the trend of casual games with a community environment that promotes social interaction,” said Trip Hawkins, founder and CEO of Digital Chocolate. “The DChoc Café Series demonstrates the promise of mobile games: socially driven entertainment that allows players to stay connected with friends while playing fun, casual games.”

The games are available now on 3, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Digital Chocolate has stated that they expected 100 carriers worldwide to carry the game.

Digital Chocolate and LG ink deal

Digital Chocolate has signed a deal with Korean electronics company LG to pre-load games on to the latter’s mobile phones, reports MobileIndustry.biz.

“This partnership provides Digital Chocolate the opportunity to market our games to LG’s extensive consumer base, allowing us to cast a wider net in the marketplace,” said Trip Hawkins, founder and CEO of Digital Chocolate. “LG’s reputation for quality and innovation makes them an ideal partner for Digital Chocolate to significantly broaden and enhance our reach.”

There have been no specific titles announced, but the partnership starts this month, with co-marketing to follow.

GDC Video: Trip Hawkins Keynote Highlights

We sliced and diced together our GDC Mobile footage to give you the best 5 minutes of His Tripness’ keynote.

The QuicklyBored Podcast - Episode 12 - March 7, 2007: GDC 2007 Day One

GDC Day 1
Wow, after major technical hurdles and a lack of good wi-fi, we finally get our first GDC podcast up. Wes and I had a chance to sit down with Mike Yuen of Qualcomm and Jefferson Valadares of Sumea to talk about Trip Hawkins, Nokia’s N-Gage platform, what we think of GDC Mobile, and who works for the smaller company.

Special Note: We totally dropped the ball recording this one, and as a result, Jeff’s supple and sensitive voice doesn’t come through very well. Sorry buddy! Next time, say it loud and proud like Mike!

GDC Blog: Things not to do at GDC Mobile

GDC
Hello boys and girls, how is everyone doing this fine morning? As I get the taste of last night out of my mouth (literally), let’s discuss some mistakes that can be made during the wondershowzen that is GDC Mobile.

– Don’t separate your GDC blogging by day when there are days that you have wall to wall meetings and are basically running around chasing people with a microphone. Seriously people, sorry about that one. To make up for it, we’re going to keep this blog train going through the rest of GDC, as everything that has happened to us gets parsed and packaged for you in that bitter yet enjoyable QB style.

GDC Blog: Why Trip Hawkins is Cool

Trip Hawkins
Whew. I’ve finally gotten a few minutes to settle and take stock of what’s been going on around me. I had to jump out of a panel, but oh well, it just wasn’t QB material. One of the things I’ve learned about GDC is that if you’re not careful, your day will slide from a well ordered regimen of panels and meetings to a free-for-all of handshakes and quick bites of bad food while you rush around a giant convention center filled with dry, recycled air. And Day 1 isn’t even over yet.

So far, things have been pretty interesting, if devoid of that E3-level excitement. Trip Hawkins kicked GDC Mobile off with a great keynote filled with insight and hope about what mobile gaming can and should strive for. It was equal parts well-reasoned argument and that old Trip Hawkins bravado; seeing him rail on friend Mitch Laskey from EA was worth the price of admission alone. Go here to read the by-the-minute blog I did.

GDC Mobile Keynote: Trip Hawkins (Live Blog!)

Trip Hawkins
9:15 - Haggard and disheveled, QB has arrived to the keynote. Luckily, Trip hasn’t said much other than the fact that we should not approach mobile gaming in the way that other gaming industries do (i.e. waiting for customers to come to a store - the carrier - and buy a game). He also dissed Mitch Laskey for buying the rights to Tetris: “we should aspire to more.”

9:16 - My guy Trip is admitting that he sometimes jumps the gun on his predictions. But he was right two years ago that data would overtake voice (good call, Trip).

9:18 - Trip wants us to focus on globalizing our businesses. He’s sad that the majority of the top 20 mobile games are not original IPs. The industry can function or grow with such high license fees. “That giant sucking sound you here is money leaving the mobile ecosystem.”
