TELUS recommends HTC Touch Pro as ultimate holiday device

TELUS has a section of their website where you can input your favorite elements of a mobile device and it will tell you what the best device is for what you want. What’s really funny about it is that they took the “monkey and a typewriter” theme but changed it to “meerkat and change-o-tron.” So I wanted to see what phone they would give me if I just turned all the settings to full blast. After a long Rube Goldberg experience, you get a suggestion. TELUS recommended me the HTC Touch Pro. Woohoo!

How to get a carrier-subsidized BlackBerry Bold before you’re eligible for upgrade

Gimme the Bold! Gimme the Bold!

I am a definition gadget whore. I will sell out king and country for the latest in gizmos; I guess that makes me more of a gadget traitor.

Last summer around the iPhone craze I upgraded my high-end Sony Ericsson camera phone to the glorious Nokia N95 8GB. I wanted a device that was a real powerhouse feature-wise without making me look like an obvious iPhone turbo-nerd. Things have been going well for the device but I was starting to long for something with better text entry than the hardly-predictive T9. Who has ever used “shiv” in a text message, I don’t think I’ll ever know.

The BlackBerry Storm available in Canada on multiple carriers

The BlackBerry Storm is launching on Bell and TELUS

The BlackBerry Storm will be coming to Canada on both Bell and TELUS. According to TELUS, they “will be the first in Canada to offer consumers the revolutionary BlackBerry Storm 9530 smartphone from Research In Motion. The addition of this world edition smart phone to TELUS’ line-up cements TELUS’ position as Canada’s smartphone leader with the most smartphones on Canada’s largest 3G network.”

Also, BlackBerry Cool commentor LouTreize has tipped off our site that the BlackBerry Storm will be coming to Bell as well in Canada!

CDMA iPhone possibly coming to Verizon Wireless

iphone for Verizon

There are a ton of rumors circulating that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon. The carrier was approached about carrying the device back in 2005 but it clearly didn’t work out. I know a lot of Canadian carriers use CDMA (Bell and Telus) and their customers will be elated with this news. On the other hand, there are plenty of other networks I would be happier to see the iPhone on. With LTE and 4G in the near future, I still have my fingers crossed for the iPhone 4G.

Canadian minister on incoming SMS charges: “Tough luck”

Telus and Bell incoming messages

Jim Prentice, Canadian Minister of Industry, recently met up with execs from Telus and Bell to discuss the upcoming $.15 charges on incoming SMS messages. In the end, Prentice, who had previously had serious concerns over the move by carriers has since backpedalled, and is advising unsatisfied customers to find alternatives.

“Given these undertakings by Bell Mobility and Telus, I would encourage consumers dissatisfied with existing plans to seek alternatives. The telecommunications market in Canada is dynamic — choice is available,”

Like who, Rogers? A single alternative isn’t exactly what you’d call choice, let alone personify a dynamic market. To be honest, it’s hardly about finding good wireless rates in Canada anymore, it’s just about finding the one who will screw you over the least. If you’re as unhappy about this as we are, the NDP party is running a petition to fight the new SMS charges. Bell’s charges have already kicked in and Telus will commence the gouging on Aug. 24.
