Square Enix announces Ellark, mobile MMO

Apparently, the game will be a “Mail Play Game”, which I have never in my life heard of in a mobile game. Still, if anyone can get it right it’ll be Square Enix, famed for the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest RPGs on consoles. The game will use micro transactions, where users can purchase Mobicoins for use in-game. The whole deal is coming out later this year in Japan, but there are no current plans for a US release.

Kingdom Hearts coming to mobile

Square Enix has announced a new round of games for their Kingdom Hearts series, including one title exclusive to mobile phones.

The game, titled Kingdom Hearts coded–yes, the coded is lowercase–is planned for a Japanese release only, with other countries to be determined later. The story takes place after the events of the original Kingdom Hearts. Jiminy Cricket returns to Disney Castle to organize his journal, and finds a mysterious message: “We must return to free them from their torment.” The story follows the King, Jiminiy Cricket and Sora as they try to trace down the origin of the message.

There’s no word yet on a release date for the game.

Interest ramping up for N-Gage phones?

The N-Gage, which is a mobile telephone and handheld game system based on the Nokia Series 60 platform, is to be incorporated into “Smart Phones” from Nokia and released this year, and the article reports that “behind the scenes, activity is ramping up, following a top-secret workshop for publishers and developers, held in Santa Monica last week”.

Kosei Ito Talks Mobile Games

I’m not crazy about the idea of an RPG on a mobile phone, but Final Fantasy is such an amazing series that it can’t go wrong. Considering FF7 took me about 70-80 hours to complete, I’m going to have to buy a six-pack of new batteries for my phone if I’m going to get through a decent FF for mobile.

Recently, Kosei Ito has been heading up the mobile division of Square Enix, the producers of the Final Fantasy franchise. Square Enix is poised to make a big splash in the North American mobile game market with the upcoming releases of FF: Before Crisis.
