Glu and Sega expand partnership

Glu and Sega have announced that they are extending their long-standing partnership, which has resulted mobile versions of games such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Monkey Ball, and Virtua Tennis.

This news follows a similar announcement made at the beginning of the year, which resulted in Glu publishing titles using Sega IP such as Football Manager Quiz, Total War, and Wonderboy.

“Glu has been a valuable partner for us over the last two years in bringing key Sega titles to a vast audience of mobile gamers,” said Alan Pritchard, Managing Director of Europe North at Sega. “Our extended partnership based on Sega’s brands and licences and Glu’s mobile expertise, will allow us to continue to bring great games to the consumer on the mobile platform.”

The new agreement will allow mobile gamers to see titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, due out this month, as well as Golden Compass and Sega Rally.

Sega hires Linda Chaplin as VP of mobile

Sega has announced that they have hired former Electronic Arts exec Linda Chaplin as vice president of their mobile division, reports MobileIndustry.biz.

Chaplin, who for more than a decade headed sales and marketing for EA’s mobile division, will be responsible for overseeing Sega’s operations in America. This will include development, sales, and marketing, as well as the overall expansion of Sega’s presence in the mobile space.

“Linda’s industry knowledge will accelerate Sega’s efforts to become a serious player in mobile markets,” said Sega COO Simon Jeffery. “We’re certain she will bring a fresh perspective to this division which holds enormous growth opportunities for the company.”

Sega said in a statement that the move was part of an overall strategy to increase focus in the Western markets.

The Code Monkeys to develop The Golden Compass

Sega has announced that they have signed The Code Monkeys to produce a mobile game based on The Golden Compass, reports MobileIndustry.biz.

Known as Northern Lights in the UK, the Golden Compass is the first book in the series His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. The mobile game is set to launch simultaneously with the film in the December.

Universomo partners with Sega

European developer Universomo has inked a deal with Sega to develop titles based on some of their licenses.

Glenn Wissner, Senior Producer for Sega of America said, “Working with Universomo has been a pure pleasure. These guys are very professional and skilled mobile developers. Universomo really understands SEGA product and have been excellent in keeping to original designs while also adding their own spin and taking our well known brands to a new level of quality. They meet their objectives and often exceed our expectation in the areas of game design, playability and art direction. I look forward to working with Universomo on future games and would highly recommend them as a mobile game developer.”

Universomo’s US Managing Director Atte Kotiranta said that the deal was one of the “highlights of 2007.” Two titles are currently in development, with releases expected this spring.

Glu and Sega extend partnership

Glu Mobile has announced that it is extending its partnership with Sega to include more games.

Glu has previously published mobile versions of titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Monkey Ball, Virtua Tennis, and Chu Chu Rocket. Under the new deal they will be working on new titles for Sega games including Football Manager Quiz, Total War, and Wonderboy.

Alan Richard, UK Managing Director for Sega Europe, spoke about the agreement:

“Glu has demonstrated a great ability to deliver quality games for mobile that meet the needs of both SEGA, and more importantly, gamers on the go. With this in mind we are happy to be extending our agreement with Glu by working on a further four titles together.”

The first game released under the new agreement will be Football Manager Quiz, which is scheduled to launch this spring.

Interest ramping up for N-Gage phones?

Stuart Dredge of Pocketgamer discusses how publishers are now checking out Nokia’s N-Gage platform at a “secret workshop”. The N-Gage, which is a mobile telephone and handheld game system based on the Nokia Series 60 platform, is to be incorporated into “Smart Phones” from Nokia and released this year, and the article reports that “behind the scenes, activity is ramping up, following a top-secret workshop for publishers and developers, held in Santa Monica last week”.

Darren Newnham goes from Sega to Telcogames

MobileIndustry.biz reports today that Darren Newnham, formerly from Sega’s European mobile division, has joined Telcogames as head of licensing. “Newnham’s experience and background in the industry will compliment our already highly skilled team and support our strategy of diversifying our existing IP towards other platforms outside of mobile,” said Jamie Conynham, CEO of Telcogames.
