Visual search engine headed to iPhone

This is just way too cool. A new technology called ViPR (pronounced “viper”) allows you to take a picture of objects like CDs, DVDs, and books, send it to the ViPR server, and receive information about whatever you took. A movie might return a video clip, a link to the soundtrack on iTunes, a website about the film, and a lengthy description. The software can even handle poorly-framed and partially obscured covers with aplomb. It would be exceptionally useful for those edgy CD covers that have no information whatsoever about the album name or artist, at the very least, plus it’s just neat as hell. Keep an eye out for a release when the App Store hits in June.
