THQ releases Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

THQ has announced the release of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, a hybrid RPG/match-three style puzzle game.

Players take control of one of eight characters spanning four classes and head out on an epic quest to save the land. Along the way, they’ll learn from 45 different spells used to take out in enemies in combat. Combat is handled by a match-three style puzzle system, with different styles of gems used to gain mana, experience, money, or do damage to the player’s enemies. Players can also equip and customize weapons and armor to gain bonuses.

The game is available for a one time charge of £4.50 by texting THQ PQ to 88188.

D3Publisher has announced that they will be bringing Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords to the mobile space via THQ Wireless.

Puzzle Quest is a mix of RPG and puzzle elements that was originally released on the Nintendo DS. The game features RPG-like character development such as stats and equipment, an overworld map, an involved storyline, and companions. However, at the heart of the game is a jewel-matching puzzler that takes place whenever you’re involved in a battle. Here your stats, spells, and equipment come into play, modifying the game board or causing more hurt to your opponent.

“The lightning quick acceptance and praise we received from fans and press for the fun, deeply immersive gaming experience we created by mixing RPG elements with puzzle gameplay were a dream come true when Puzzle Quest launched,” said Steve Fawkner, lead designer and chief executive officer of Infinite Interactive, creators of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. “The gaming community has offered such warm support and we are elated to open the game up to more fans by offering new ways to play.”

The game is due out for handhelds in early 2008.
