Bejeweled available for iPhone

PopCap Games has announced that they have launched a custom version of Bejeweled for the Safari web browser in Apple’s iPhone.

Bejeweled was first released in 2001 and its incredible popularity spawned a host of clones as well as a new genre–the match 3 puzzler. This latest version makes use of Web 2.0 features available in Safari, and has been optimized to take advantage of the unique display and controls on the iPhone.

“We’re excited to be providing the most popular puzzle game of the 21st century to users of the most advanced mobile device yet created,” said Andrew Stein, Director of Mobile Platforms at PopCap. “We wanted to give the hundreds of thousands of iPhone users a fun, fast gaming fix - and at no cost, no less.”

The game is freely available to play by visiting PopCap’s website via the iPhone.

PopCap targets the mobile sector

PopCap Games’ chief creative officer, Jason Kapalka, has stated that they will be moving focus from the PC to casual titles in the mobile space, reports MobileIndustry.biz.

Kapalka says that casual games are the future of mobile gaming, and that they will avoid the lure of 3D games.

“The form factor of a mobile device is very applicable to casual games. Companies like Electronic Arts have tried to make more complicated mobile games and the hardware is getting to the point where you can do things like 3D on the cell phone. But what hasn’t changed is that it’s still a one inch screen that you’re trying to play with one thumb on a little clumsy keyboard,” said Kapalka. “So despite the presence of a lot of technological games on cell phone, the fact that games like Tetris, Bejeweled and Solitaire dominate the top ten lists of mobile gaming suggests that casual games are going to be the dominant force for some time to come.”

Kapalka recently gave an interview to MobileIndustry.biz’s sister site, GamesIndustry.biz.

PopCap Games releases Chuzzle

PopCap Games has announced that they have released a mobile version of Chuzzle, a puzzle game originally released on the web and PCs.

In the game, players slide rows of cute little fuzzballs called chuzzles to create matching rows or columns of three or more of the same color. The chuzzles then “explode with happiness” and more fall into place from above. There are four different game modes and numerous special chuzzle types to keep the game fresh.

“Chuzzle is a great game for mobile devices, and we’ve spent a lot of time optimizing it for that platform,” said Jason Kapalka, co-founder and chief creative officer at PopCap Games. “We’ve simplified the already straightforward game mechanics to take advantage of the input controls across hundreds of models of cell phones and other mobile devices, and the game plays faster and more intuitively than ever. That said, we’ve also retained the endless ‘Zen’ mode in the mobile version, because we know that Chuzzle is a great on-the-go source of relaxation for many players.”

The game is available now throughout North American and Europe.
