Sony PlayStation comes to mobile phones

The ultimate in mobile gaming

Zeemote+PlayStation+Pico Projector+Mobile=HECK YES!

Although we are a long ways away from getting to the above image, it represents where I think mobile gaming should be going to be successful with the hardcore gamers. Imagine that: A nice handset running GTA4 on the Pico Projector and using the Zeemote for controls. Ideal but not happening for a long time. On the bright side, PlayStation has licensed some of its games for mobile for the first time.

Player X and Sony inked a deal to bring mobile versions of console hits Buzz! and Destruction Derby. Both games are set to land in July.

The game features Etch A Sketch-themed characters called Knobbies in a number of interactive mini-games, as well as over 100 levels. It will be launched on mobile phones first, with an online game following later.

“With Etch A Sketch’s extraordinary brand recognition, we are confident that kids and adults alike will enjoy these new Etch A Sketch games and the new Knobby characters,” said Craig Holland, CEO of Freeze Tag.

The mobile game launches this December across Player X’s 150 global carriers. The online version will launch one month afterward.

Player X and Amobee team up

Player X has announced that they’ve teamed up with Amobee to offer ad-funded versions of some of the former’s games.

The games use Amobee’s Handset Application Programming Interface (HAPI), which is a small development kit that allows them to become “Amobee-ready” and available to take ads. Gamers will be able to opt-in to the ad-funded versions, receiving a discount on the purchase price for receiving ads during launch, exit, and idle time.

“Ad-funded content models have the potential to transform the mobile content business, giving the end user more for less while generating an additional revenue stream,” said Player X CEO Tony Pearce. “We see this model and our partnership with Amobee as a crucial step toward building the development expertise and look forward to working with them.”

The first ad-funded titles to launch will be Sale of the Century, Strike it Lucky, Sensible Soccer Skillz, Space Invaders, Family Fortunes, and ToCA Race Driver 3.

Player X has announced that they will be the official aggregator for UK operator O2.

Under the deal, Player X will work with over 20 publishers to take their games through QA, deployment, and porting to publish them on O2’s mobile games portal.

“We searched high and low for a company that could mix commercial savvy with operational delivery of QA, porting and deployment,” said Antony Douglas, Head of Games at O2 UK. “Thanks to a long-standing relationship with Player X, we had such a company on our doorstep and we’re confident this relationship will mean our mobile games partners’ content will reach our customers in the fastest possible time.”

Player X announces Hollywood Hospital and new franchise

Player X has announced a new game called Hollywood Hospital, which they intend to branch off into a series of games, reports MobileIndustry.biz.

The game is a mix of the tycoon and lifestyle genres. It features a host of crazy illnesses and weird machines inspired by classic Hollywood movies. The staff are constantly falling in love with the patients, who in turn are trying to duck the paparazzi. It’s currently in development by 8Bit Games.

“This is a major new publishing franchise from Player X,” said company CEO Tony Pearce. “We’re delighted to have come up with something as original as Hollywood Hospital and are looking forward to mobile gamers getting the bug for it as much as the patients in the game.”

Hollywood Hospital will launch globally in the fourth quarter of this year. Another game in the franchise, Hollywood Hotel, is currently in pre-production.

Player X has announced that they have signed a deal to distribute games from Fishlabs 3D in Europe, Asia, and South America.

Games under the deal include Blades & Magic and DEEP. Three further games will be announced near the end of Q3 2007.

“Since more operators now outsource their mobile game needs, it’s vital for any content provider to find a distribution partner with as many direct channels as possible,” said Michael Schade, CEO and co-founder of Fishlabs. “Player X was our first choice to partner with because of their impressive list of global distribution channels and its highly professional in-house team.”
