Taiwanese concept phone uses flexible screen

I love when new concept phones hit the Internet. I get to sit here and marvel at what OS they might be using and what cool apps we could develop for them. The latest is from a Taiwanese research institute that has revealed a smartphone that can double its screen size to 5 inches. But that’s not the best part. The mock-up uses a flexible screen so you can bend at the 3 inch mark to create various screen sizes. It seems like either a developers worst nightmare or dream come true. If I knew more about the dev process I might be able to tell which one.

How to turn your iPod Touch into a mobile VoIP phone

Hack

This post isn’t about mobile devices, but since the iPod Touch with VoIP is like a mobile phone, I believe it qualifies. iPod hackers Dr Marian Kepesi, “Eok” and Samuel Vinson have designed and shipped an iPod Touch microphone and developed VoIP software that allows you to place calls using the mic/software combo.

The story of how this came together is great. Kepesi started the operation when he modded the docking cable, connecting the line-in pins to live audio, and recorded his first sample. The sound level was low but the signal was live. The iPod Touch’s ability to record was uncovered. Kepesi then put together his parts list and posted the circuit details so anyone could build the open source, dockable microphone. In total the parts cost about $30.

What is really inside your mobile phone

Ok this may be old but just in case you haven’t seen it before I’m posting it. It’s Friday so anything goes right? This video features a kid who was pissed off about his cell phone bill so he put his phone in the microwave. What comes next will make you say: “I knew carriers put that sort of thing in my phone!”

Mobile gaming to get boost with Sony PSP phone

Sony will not be using the help of Sony Ericsson to develop a PSP phone. Some are saying that the concept of developing a PSP phone will be relatively simple due to the fact that PSP already includes WiFi. Personally, I really hope they change the look of the PSP before they turn it into a phone. Otherwise we’ll be looking at another N-Gage and that is not cool. Other than that, a gaming phone with the capabilities of the PSP would be really great for the mobile gaming industry. We need to move beyond what even the BlackBerry can provide in terms of gaming.

Motorola patents giant ugly goggle phone

This product does not exist but why even bother making a patent for it? Motorola thinks people are actually going to flip open their phone and place it on their face like giant ugly goggles. Is it even possible to see through the phone? That would be a major oversight wouldn’t it? This is the last post of the week so I thought I would end on a note of absurdity.
