Carleton University technology to increase mobile battery life

Atif Samim, a student at Carelton University, just a few minutes from QuicklyBored headquarters in Ottawa Canada, has developed new antenna technology that will increase battery life. The technology is expected to reduce power consumption by nearly 92%. The technology seems fairly simple which is usually a staple of anything brilliant. The system involves disconnecting the antenna from the rest of the components in the device.

Because the antenna is separated from the other components, Shamim’s system uses very short range wireless transmitting micro-antennas within the chip design to handle the communications. Shamim has already filed for patents to protect his invention. I can’t wait until this tech is implemented. Are you listening Steve Jobs?

BlackBerry Bold on Rogers going for $649.99 w/o contract

    BlackBerry Bold pricing

If for some reason you wanted to spend more than the $399.99 asking price on a three-year contract with Rogers the BlackBerry 9000 (like to roam with an AT&T plan instead of going with Rogers), it looks like you’ll be able to grab the Bold for $649.99 without any strings attached. That’s the standard $250 that usually gets subsidied on BlackBerrys, but when you take a look at the BlackBerry 8220 getting knocked down to $50 from $599.99, you have to wonder how much more favourably Rogers wants the iPhone to look versus the Bold. The Rogers outlet here in Ottawa has the Bold on display, which makes me think that it’s ready for sale, but still nothing on an announcement, or any presence in the online store. Full release could be available as soon as tomorrow. The big question is are you getting one?

    QuicklyBored on television: iPhone Frenzy

Never do TV interviews after being awake for 30 hours.

It has taken us ages to finally get my hands on these videos. After writing to the various news agencies about getting a copy of the video, they responded with comments like “don’t bother, it’s a pain in our ass.” So we had to go over their heads and just rip it right off the site. I know it’s a little rude to steal content we linked to them and they did steal Kyle’s soul.

Buying an iPhone 3G - A night to remember

    Holding 2 old iPhones

Not even a White Squall can stop us from getting our iPhones!

So I showed up at the Rogers Plus store on Bank and Glebe in Ottawa Canada to buy the iPhone 3G. I had called 30 minutes earlier to discover 2 people were already waiting in line so I hauled ass over to the store.

After a couple of hours a few more early adopters showed up and the line started to gain some size. At first we were bummed that Rogers wouldn’t let us use their bathroom or their WiFi, but then people got to socializing and we remembered we were all about to own the slickest device on Earth.
