Next generation iPhones to use gyroscope technology (rumor)

There is a rumor going around that the next generation of iPhones will include an advanced motion-sensing device, in the form of a gyroscope. The rumor comes from Taiwanese manufacturing sources which would make sense because so much of the iPhone manufacturing is outsourced there.

The technology is called an MEMS gyroscope and will be included in a variety of smartphones by Apple, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson. The technology can be found in the Wii’s MotionPlus accessory which allows for sensing rotational motion as well as improving the overall motion sensing system.

What does this mean for the iPhone? More intense Wii-like gaming and perhaps a new UI.

The state of the mobile games industry 2008

Tricia Duryee
is with paidContent.org and I had the pleasure of meeting her at a Glu press event in San Francisco. In any case, she interviewed Gonzague de Vallois of Gameloft about the state of mobile gaming and he had some interesting things to say.

Back when QuicklyBored first started, we were 100% mobile gaming. The industry was in a terrible state. The industry was bogged down with heavy royalty payments, inefficient distribution and seemingly never ending porting.

This is starting to change.
The industry is now blessed with perfect distribution models such as the iPhone App Store, as well as innovative technologies such as Google’s Android. On top of that, there are platforms such as N-Gage which are developing graphically intense games to match the high power hardware they’re putting out.

mobiPad lets you play Nokia games with a Nintendo Wii-mote

The guys who make mobiPad have come out with a cool product demo video! I wrote about these guys a while back when I was judging for Mobile Content 2008. I can’t remember if I heard about them through the awards, or just at the same time. Either way, they should have been at the awards. I would have voted them right to the top.

Using mobiPad, you can control your entire mobile phone with the game controller of the Nintendo Wii. Use it to play games or as a remote control for the media player on your Symbian S60 or UIQ device (N95, P1i, P990) - the wireless gamepad is always an ergonomic way to interact. You can finally play standard games on touchscreen devices and no longer have to worry about buttons that are close together - and all this without buying a dedicated mobile games controller that you could not use for anything else!

HTC viral video for T-Mobile showcases Nintendo game playability

Watch as David Bruce of HTC talks about some of the highlights of T-Mobile’s HTC offerings. You might find out something you didn’t know! And, if you’re like me, you’ll get a good laugh over the acting. I particularly loved the phone conversation with Joe at the beginning. Poor Joe is clearly completely daft.

Check out around 3:30 where HTC promotes the fact that they can play Nintendo games.

MobiPad gives you control of your Nokia S60 phone using a Nintendo WiiMote.
The wireless gamepad gives you a wireless means of connecting the phone and WiiMote so you can play mobile games in a whole new way.

All you have to do is turn on Bluetooth and select “Discover Wiimote” in the mobiPad options menu. Turn on the WiimOte and they both sync up. Easy! Now you can play S60 Quake, Doom Legacy, vBag and more with a sweet WiiMote interface. Connect your phone to a TV and you have a portable console!

Nintendo offers up classic IPs for cell phones

Yeah, so it’s not really mobile gaming news. Deal with it. Any way to get Mario on your mobile is a good thing, even if it only serves as a reminder of all the fun you’re not having with your cell phone.
