ONE for Nokia N-Gage platform - 3D vs fighting

Originally called “ONE: Who’s Next?”, ONE is a slick looking 3D vs fighting game for the N-Gage platform. Although the graphics look great, the first thing that comes to mind is how are the controls? Fighting games require a ton of user input and this kind of interface just doesn’t work for mobile.

According to an AANG review, “you are always conscious of where your thumbs are and what you want to press.” Apparently the reviewer hit the menu button a few times. That’s probably the most frustrating thing to experience in a mobile game. Not sure if we’re ready for this type of button mashing but the game still looks awesome.

Nokia’s Reset Generation has high production values

Nokia’s Reset Generation, previously known as Project White Rock, will “shatter expectations” about what mobile games are capable of, says designer Scott Foe. The game, which is scheduled for release this summer, combines turn-based strategy with arcade action and spoofs classic video game characters like Mario (”Plumber”) and Sonic (”Hedgehog”). Up to 4 players can play at once, attempting to steal princesses from each others’ castles by laying down blocks, shooting cannons, and using power-ups and special moves. Foe says they mean for it to be “[t]he highest production value mobile title ever.” When it launches for the N-Gage, there will also be a free browser-based version where home users can play against N-Gage owners.

A phone running N-Gage
Arjan at the Mobile Games Blog posted about a new rumor floating around that the N-Gage might launch some time this week, at the CTIA Wireless show. It’s fairly plausible, as a recent interview with Nokia bigwig Jaakko Kaidesoja quoted him as saying the launch would be “in the coming weeks.” As mobile-ent.biz points out, however, Nokia usually prefers to host their own events for launches. There’s nothing to do but wait and see, at this point.

Nokia announces new N-Gage service

Nokia has announced a new N-Gage service that will follow the release of the N-Gage later this year.

The service will allow gamers to try N-Gage games for free on any compatible device. If you like the game, it can be bought and downloaded to your PC or handheld and continued. The service can be downloaded from the N-Gage website and installed on a PC or phone, but Nokia has also announced that it will come included on some phones, such as the N81 and the N93 8GB.

“As we expand our focus from a dedicated game phone to a gaming service, we are making getting and playing games even easier,” said Jaakko Kaidesoja, head of the games business at Nokia. “The N-Gage service combined with powerful devices, world class titles and brands, and interactive social networking features, takes the mobile gaming experience beyond traditional boundaries.”

Nokia has said that pricing on the service will range from €6 to €10, excluding local taxes. Daily and weekly game licenses are also available at a reduced cost. The service will launch in November.

Nokia announces two news games for N-Gage

Nokia has announced that they will be releasing Snakes Subsonic and Boing Boing Voyage for the upcoming N-Gage.

Sakes Subsonic is a new twist on the classic game of Snake. It features a 3D graphics engine and four zones–Earth Win, Water, and Fire–with 10 levels each. Powerups are included, including shields and other secrets. Both a single-player mode and a multiplayer mode are available, and players can view the Top 50 lists for each level of game play.

In Boing Boing Voyage, the evil Hypnotoid has taken over the world of Pongpingy by hypnotizing everyone. Players must guide the Bounce ball through three puzzle-filled lands. It features one-thumb game and three ball forms–Bounce, Rock, and Mud ball–that gamers will have to master in order to complete their mission. This updated version of the game Bounce has made the transition from 2D to 3D.

The new N-Gage launches this fall.
