Blockbuster streaming movies coming to mobile

Blockbuster is going to develop a mobile video service that will stream video to your phone. The service will be built on Microsoft’s Live Mesh software platform. Keith Morrow, Blockbuster’s chief information officer, says the user will be able to watch a movie on a mobile phone, pause the media stream, and return to the movie from a home PC picking up right where they left off.

“Eventually, we’ll give customers instant access to any movie on any device with an Internet connection and a screen. More immediately, we could use this technology to reach into airports. Travelers could quickly download movies from Blockbuster kiosks to their portable media players.”

I’m not sure when the service is launching, but I’ll keep you updated!

Vibration alerts improve soccer games on mobile video

better_mobile_video_soccer

Soccer is a huge driver of mobile video. Soccer fans want to keep in touch with their favorite team and be able to watch the game wherever they are. Sports in general are driving this business. One of the benefits of mobile video is that the device is much more closely connected to your life.

University researches in Sweden saw an opportunity here and have made vibration alerts for soccer games being watched on a mobile device. The vibration alerts are tied to the game and if someone kicks the ball, your phone will vibrate. The vibrations change depending on how close the ball is to the net, so you know when to tune in.

In their method, a cell phone is synchronized with the ball in the real field, most likely through manual input. As the researchers note, the ball is the focus of most of the attention, which can be seen by TV cameras constantly following the ball. Every time the ball is kicked, the phone vibrates. Depending on where the ball is located on the field (which is divided into five segments), the phone vibrates at a specific frequency and duration.

uVuMobile and CinemaNow team up for mobile movie service

uVuMobile and CinemaNow have announced a partnership to bring movie purchasing power to mobile phones. Using the service, Internet-capable mobile phones can watch trailers (I hope you have an unlimited data plan if you do), as well as purchase or rent over 10,000 titles. The titles are then sent straight to your PC at home, so if you hear about a movie while you’re out and about you can buy it right then and have it waiting for you when you get home. You can also set up the service to go to a network storage device or portable media player, if that’s your thing. Pretty cool, all in all.

The Internet is almost full

A new report from AT&T says that the Internet will have reached capacity by 2010. Jim Cicconi, vice president of legislative affairs for AT&T, said that by that date “20 typical households will generate more traffic than the entire Internet today.” Most of the increase is supposed to be from the emergence of video, especially high-def video, which is much larger. It strikes me as a rather laughable claim: with just over one billion users of the Internet all told, and assuming an average of 3 users per household, each and every one of them would have to increase their usage 21,000,000 times beyond what they currently use to reach the numbers Cicconi is suggesting, unless my math is wrong (a strong possibility). Mobile phones have certainly helped to increase Internet usage, and it will only get worse as 3 and 4G networks start being used and as mobile video/music/gaming continues to expand, but to say we’re about to run out of bandwidth is hard to swallow.

iPhone is king in mobile entertainment

iPhone
A recent survey from M:Metrics indicates that the iPhone is the top device for mobile entertainment, including mobile video and social networking services. Only about 20% of the smartphone market visits social networking sites, while almost half of iPhone users do. In general internet usage, 85% of iPhone users went out and explored, compared to only 52% of other smartphones. Mobile gaming wasn’t mentioned, but with the recent release of the software development kit and upcoming release of the AppStore — not to mention large number of companies excited about the iPhone’s features — it’s an easy bet that they’ll make a big splash in that sector as well.

Video from Jetix available on Orange

jetix
Orange customers in the UK, Poland, Romania, and Moldova will soon have access to mobile video from Jetix, reports mobile-ent.biz. The UK will be receiving a tailored loop of content specific for that area, while Poland will get the full Jetix and Jetix Play channels, which are for older and younger kids respectively. It was unclear what Romania and Moldova will be getting, but things are obviously still in the works, as Jetix said that other aras in the region are being considered for a rollout.
