Mobile TV coming to an iPhone near you

i.tv coming to the iPhone

Mobile TV on the iPhone is going to be great. I’m really excited about this product because a great screen resolution combined with a simple user interface could make for some great mobile TV. According to i.TV’s product demo video, which can be viewed on their site, they have an awesome line up of shows. We’re not sure when this is going to be released but according to the company’s blog:

The approval process is taking longer than anticipated and it’s not Apple’s fault. A few weeks ago, we noticed something happening in the version we submitted to Apple that ultimately would have had an unwanted effect on our users’ experience. We temporarily pulled it from App Store approval process to fix the problem. It caused a delay but we’re glad we caught it before everyone else did!

Update: Sorry to give you guys the wrong impression, but with the first release of this product you will be able to watch previews and movie trailers but not TV. The company is saying “we don’t know if and when that will be possible.” It still does remain that mobile TV for the iPhone would be great. I really hope this company heads that mission.

Free, no ads episodes of 30 Rock and The Office on iPhone

It looks like NBC is now streaming free episodes of 30 Rock and The Office to iPhones and iPod Touches. They’re both shown without ads, which is nice, but come with a catch: if you exit Safari while watching, you’ve got to re-download the very large files again. Not a huge problem in the US — as long as you’ve got Wi-Fi — but might cause some headaches for Canadian users when the iPhone hits there, due the high price for bandwidth up north.

Where are the ads?

The Herald Tribune has taken a look at the current and potential future state of mobile advertising, and the outlook is less than rosy. Currently, mobile advertising counts for around $1 billion a year — an impressive-sounding figure which sounds much less impressive when you realize that it’s two tenths of one percent of the global figures. Beyond that, most of that comes from text messaging campaigns, instead of ad-funded games or commercials on mobile TV. No one likes ads, of course, but they’re important to drive the growth of any industry, and they help in getting you free goodies. Unfortunately, analysts can’t agree on how fast it will grow (if at all), with estimates ranging from $7.6 billon to $25 billion by 2013.

Samsung’s SGH-P960 is practically a TiVo

Samsung has just announced a new phone called the SGH-P960, which includes a number of DVR-like feature for mobile TV. It can pause live TV when a call comes in, so you won’t miss any action on the 2.6 inch screen, and offers picture-in-picture and an on-screen programming guide. It also includes a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash. Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing and it’s only available in Europe so far, so hopefully we’ll see this bad boy in other markets soon.
