Personalized Mobile Games

Big brother
The mobile phone is an extremely personal device. The fact that every conversation and text message go directly through a network should make you grateful that we don’t live in an Orwellian society; although National ID cards are only a matter of time.

Given that we have so much of our lives passing through this device, the mobile gaming industry needs to capitalize on it. Justin Hall, at the Mobile Game Conference, had his own take on this subject. His dream of passively multiplayer gaming is one aspect of what I would like to describe as personalized gaming.

MGC Hangover: Carriers and the Mobile Games Universe

Homer
Worst. Panel. Ever.
Sometimes (strike that: most of the time), it’s hard working in the mobile games industry. You’re the pip-squeak younger brother of the older, better established console and PC variants, the games you play aren’t as cool (or as good), and people look at you funny when you talk passionately about all the hours you’ve logged playing with fake money in THK2. Worst of all, you know that you live and die at the behest of modern-day train barons: cell phone carriers. It was with this sorry resignation that we entered probably the most depressing mobile panel we’ve ever been to.

MGC Hangover: Final Impressions

Drunk
With so much happening at the QuicklyBored office, and so much that happened at the Mobile Games Conference that we still have to write about, you might see a few MGC Hangover articles on the site over the next few days. Don’t worry, we’ll soon turn our attention back to new things that bother us (we actually have a few surprises in store for ya). First up, our final impressions of the MGC.

– Despite being a new and fairly small conference, the MGC has a very large per capita of major industry players. This is definitely thanks to the hard work of mainly two men: Eric Goldberg and Matthew Bellows, who kept both days light, speedy and thoroughly thought inducing. Besides, at what other conference afterparty can you do body shots off of Trip Hawkins while Jason Ford and Steve Palley are doing their best “What is Love?” SNL impression out on the dance floor?

P.S. Only 50% of what’s mentioned above actually happened.

Mobile Game Conference — Justin Hall Interview Pt. 1

Mobile gaming
If you took the time to listen to Justin Hall’s MGC keynote, you probably already know what you’re in for. Attempting to answer questions few in the mobile games industry even think to ask, Hall is considered by some to be the next Will Wright. In part one of this two part interview, we delve deeper into Justin’s keynote and the meaning behind “passively multiplayer games.” Enjoy.

Note: to get maximum enjoyment out of this interview, you might want to listen to the keynote.

Justin Hall Keynote — The Creative Potential of Mobile Games

Justin Hall, a New Media Research Specialist (impressive title… what does it mean?), is the type of person the mobile games industry needs more of. The last keynote of the Mobile Game Conference, Justin’s speech on The Creative Potential of Mobile Games set the room on fire and was easily the best one of the show (sorry, Trip).

Mobile Game Conference — Panel Report

Evolution
The Rapid Evolution of the Mobile Game Publisher

If carriers are the tracks of the mobile games industry, then publishers are the train that drives the industry forward. However, the recent influx of big name companies onto the mobile scene (think EA and Microsoft), as well as the ever-fickle relationship between publishers and carriers, have put pure-play mobile-only game companies in a bit of a ‘kill or be killed’ position. With that in mind, we were eager to sit in and hear about what exactly The Rapid Evolution of the Mobile Game Publisher entails.

The Mobile Community

As we told you earlier, the two big phrases being tossed around this year’s Mobile Game Conference were “social connector” and “communication.” With that in mind, we headed into The Mobile Community panel with high hopes of hearing industry leaders give clear articulation of what’s necessary to build a strong mobile community and what they’re doing to improve them. No such luck.

Mobile Game Conference-Live Coverage!

Trip Hawkins
2nd Day One Keynote: Trip Hawkins, CEO and Chairman, Digital Chocolate

1:20 - Trip Hawkins is just taking the stage right now. Starting off by asking how we make mobile phones a first-rate platform instead of a second rate TV or Nintendo DS.

Transition into talking about the DS. Nintendo could have just put Mario on the device and called it a day, but that would have been a second-rate Mario game. They didnt do that and DS is number one.
