Speaker roster for GDC Mobile 2008 revealed

The CMP Group has released the roster of speakers for the Game Developers Conference Mobile 2008.

Featured speakers for the year include Mofactor CEO John Szeder; Mitch Lasky, partner at Benchmark Capital; Rich Moran, partner at Venrock; Chip Austin, managing principal of i-Hatch Ventures; Pikkle KK president David Collier; Tom Park, director of operations at Digital Chocolate; and Rick Marazzani, general manager of iQ212.

“GDC Mobile is uniquely positioned to bring together leading creative and business professionals in the mobile games industry to showcase and brainstorm innovation at both the development and business levels,” said Jamil Moledina, Executive Director of the Game Developers Conference. “We’re also excited to put our thumb on the scale a bit, and reward some of the most ambitious mobile game developers at our first annual IGF Mobile awards.”

The GDC will will be held February 18th and 19th as the Moscone Convention Center. A full roster of sessions and speakers can be found at the conference’s website.

Mitch Lasky leaves Electronic Arts

Mitch Lasky, formerly executive vice president of EA Mobile, has left the company for a position of general partner at Benchmark Capital, reports MobileIndustry.biz.

“As the ecosystems of gaming, entertainment and mobile technologies converge, Mitch has the inside track on the publishers, mobile carriers and talented entrepreneurs - both inside and outside traditional Silicon Valley circles - who are pushing the margins of new media,” said Benchmark Capital’s Bill Gurley. “He brings a rare blend of business judgment, practical experience and passion to everything he works on, and has the hands-on experience of taking a raw idea and turning it into a leading global company.”

Lasky will be in charge of identifying investment opportunities for the mobile platform. He was quoted as saying that he is “tremendously excited” to work with Benchmark.

We have to admit, the QB Crew is a little burnt out from GDC prep, so expect a little bit of snarkiness in our most recent podcast update.

This time, we respond to recent news from Eidos and Gameloft to ask “to brand or not to brand?”, and discuss EA’s impending development for the iPhone.

Because all good things come in twos, we also hit you with the second part of our interview with Namco’s Jason Ford and Scott Rubin. Namco’s brain trust dish out about iPhone development, GDC, and what Glu’s recent financial troubles mean for the industry as a whole.

EA to produce iPhone games?

Senior VP of EA Mobile Mitch Lasky has revealed that they are in talks with Apple about producing games for the new iPhone, reports MobileIndustry.biz.

Little is known of the iPhone’s gaming potential, but EA is reported to be excited about the possibilities. Lasky was quoted in Business Week as saying that they have been talking to Apple, as well as saying:

“We see a lot of the technology that we’ve utilised on the iPod side being incorporated into the iPhone.”

EA has already produced 5 titles for the iPod. MobileIndustry.biz suggests that PopCap Games might be interested in producing iPhone titles, as it already makes casual gaming titles for the iPod.

Nokia and EA Team Up

Nokia 6680EA to bring mobile titles to current and next generation Nokia devices.

Nokia and Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) have announced a collaboration that will see EA become a supplier of mobile games to millions of Nokia mobile device owners through Nokia Content Discoverer. This solution allows mobile customers easy access to downloadable content through a collection of shopping mall “stores” on their mobile device.
