How to download mobile games from AT&T’s carrier deck

RIM

I’ve been getting some of our less technically-inclined readers emailing me asking “how do I download mobile games from my AT&T BlackBerry?” It seemed like too easy of a question to answer so I’ve been avoiding it but there is no such thing as a stupid question and I’ll happily respond.

For this how-to, I’m using an AT&T BlackBerry Bold courtesy of Research in Motion (RIM). The first thing you’ll notice about the Bold is that it has 6 icons on the lower section of the screen. From that list you have (or at least on my Bold): messages, email, address book, calendar, MEdia Net and media.

New York Times Crosswords for BlackBerry by Magmic reviewed

Magmic Games have been making games for BlackBerry for a long time now and QuicklyBored has been with them all the way. Because we’re both based in Ottawa (blocks apart), we’ve had the opportunity for interviews with both their CEO and developers. Magmic is doing great things for promoting the BlackBerry gaming business and their latest game, The New York Times Crosswords, is a sweet addition to their lineup.

On October 2nd, the game launched exclusively to AT&T and will be available until January 1st 2009. After that time, the product will be available across most U.S. and Canadian carriers, as well as offered through Bplay.com, Magmic’s direct-to-consumer shopping portal.

More mobile titles move to smartphones

Nokia SmartphonesMagmic Games and Hudson Entertainment have announced a deal where some Hudson titles will be published on the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices.

The first game to make the move will be Hudson’s Super Bomberman, which will become available from Magmic’s website and their bplay.com service.

“Hudson Mobile has long been known for its outstanding mobile products, and we are very pleased to be partnering with them in bringing their titles to a previously untapped audience” said Nicholas Reichenbach, vice president of publishing for Magmic.

This showcases the current trend of smartphones becoming increasingly popular gaming devices.

Phase 10 coming to mobile

Magmic Games has announced a partnership with board, card, and dice games producer Fundex Games to bring Phase 10 to mobile phones.

Phase 10 is one of the world’s best-selling card games, having sold over 30 million units. Originally created in 1982, the game is based on a variant of rummy known as Liverpool Rummy and requires a special deck. The mobile version promises to be “pick up n’ play” and features single player and multiplayer action.

“Lead designer Wes Tam and Magmic’s casual games design team were challenged to produce the best-looking card game on the market, and they delivered,” said Magmic Vice President Phil Giroux. “Phase 10 features effects, transitions, and animations that surpass any other card game I’ve seen for mobile — even the sound effects rock. Phase 10 mobile is a truly an enjoyable, and addictive, gaming experience.”

The game will launch throughout North America in mid-October.

Smart phone gaming market expanding?

The market for games on BlackBerrys, Treos and other smart phones is growing at a “red-hot” pace, reports an article on the Wall Street Journal.

According to the article, publishers such as Electronic Arts, Gameloft, and Glu–who once considered the smart phone market too small to develop or publish for–are now jumping on board with new offerings. Electronic Arts now offers 30% of its catalog to BlackBerry and devices that use the Windows Mobile platform, while Gameloft recently announced 30 new games for the BlackBerry.

Even Apple’s iPhone, which as yet has no support for third-party games, is being targeted by developers like PopCap, who recently announced that their hit Bejeweled is available via the iPhone’s built in web browser.

Phone manufacturers are spotting the trend as well: BlackBerry creator Research In Motion opened up part of their internal software to game makers to ease development, and Microsoft is working with carriers to develop a solution to making getting games for Windows Mobile devices easier.

Games are still sometimes hard to find however, and users continually turn to Magmic’s Bplay, Handango.com, or Thumbplay.com for their fix.
