Quake being ported to iPhone by id Software

We’ve seen videos of Quake being ported to the iPod touch and the whole time most of us wondered where id Software was on all of this but now we know: they were sitting in the boardroom thinking “damn, why didn’t we think of that?”

John Carmack, id Software’s founder and technical director, said he regrets that scheduling conflicts prevented id from having an iPhone game ready in time for the App Store launch earlier this month. However, he added: “We have a title we want to develop exclusively for iPhone… I’m not announcing anything specifically, but it would be a graphical tour de force.”

id to license Orcs and Elves engine?

Quake
id Software’s Steve Nix has made it known that the company is considering licensing the engine used in Orcs and Elves and Doom RPG, reports MobileIndustry.biz via an interview on Gamasutra.

“We just started talking about that. I was just talking to John about that yesterday, and we thought yeah, that makes sense,” said Nix. “We’ve just been busy with a few things, and just haven’t gotten around to it, but it’s good technology and it makes sense to license it out, so that’s probably something we’ll start talking about. Cellphone and DS.”

The engine, written by legendary programmer John Carmack, is available on both mobile phones and the Nintendo DS. According to Nix, “a lot of people” who try to write their own engines for the two platforms are recreating the mistakes made on the PC and early consoles.

“When John started investigating this technology he said, ‘I can’t believe these are the same problems we were working with 10 years ago, and we solved those problems, but people are still doing it again!’” added Nix.

As the time of writing, there has been no official announcement of plans to license the engine.

Electronic Arts announces Orcs and Elves sequel

Electronic Arts has announced that they are publishing a sequel to id Software’s Orcs and Elves through their mobile publishing arm, EA Mobile, reports MobileIndustry.biz.

The original Orcs and Elves is a story-driven action/RPG. Players take the role of an elf as he attempt to retake a Dwarven city from an invading force. There are no details as yet about the sequel.

“Orcs and Elves changed a lot of people’s perceptions by showing that you could build an easily accesible, story-rich RPG for today’s mobile phones,” said Travis Boatman, VP of worldwide studios at EA Mobile. id Software’s John Carmack called the sequel a “polished gem” and said that the sequel will open up new parts of the world while “improving all elements that were loved about the original game.”

The game is in development now at Fountainhead Studios and is scheduled for release this Christmas.

Electronic Arts releases Orcs & Elves

Electronic Arts has announced the release of fantasy role playing game Orcs & Elves.

Developed exclusively for mobile phones by id Software and Fountainhead Entertainment and using the DOOM RPG graphics engine, Orcs & Elves combines first person action/adventure gameplay with the puzzle game genre. Players must explore ancient Dwarven fortresses with the help of a magical talking wand. Weapons from flaming swords to crossbows can be used to beat the over 35 enemies in the game as you disable traps to reach the treasure beyond.

John Carmack of id Software spoke about the game:

“With Orcs & Elves we were able to take what was great about DOOM RPG, and bring tons of new features to the experience in a brand new world. The pace of development in mobile gaming allows us to evolve by leaps and bounds each year, rather than stretched out over four years like a high end PC or console game.”

The game is available now for download across Europe.
