Electronic Arts announces SimCity Societies

Electronic Arts has announced SimCity Societies for mobile phones.

Based on the popular PC title, SimCity Societies put players in charge of building and managing a thriving city. Players can start from a number of different scenarios or an empty patch of bare land, then place 50 building types to create everything from a police state to a liberal utopia. As the city grows, even more buildings are unlocked, and challenges–such as earthquakes–can upset the delicate balance.

“We are very excited to release the mobile version of SimCity Societies,” said Javier Ferreira, VP of European Publishing at EA. “This is a great game for either someone new to the SimCity experience as it is engaging and rewarding quickly or for loyal SimCity fans to take the their game experience with them anywhere they go. Interview with EA’s Javier Ferreira

Javier FerreiraLast Wednesday, we reported that MobileIndustry.biz would be posting an interview with Electronic Arts’ VP of publishing, Javier Ferreira. Today, they have posted the full text of the interview.

The interview focuses on the company’s plans for 2007, including their idea to use the mobile platform to link gamers across formats.

MobileIndustry.biz: What do you think the key is to capturing, keeping and growing a mobile community?

Javier Ferreira: The key to a community is aggregating a number of people around a common interest - something simple like The Sims or Battlefield, these properties that we have that generate a lot of community interest, and then giving those people the tools and ability to build the house that they want. It’s about building things from the bottom.

From a technology and development point of view that’s much more complex, because suddenly I don’t have to worry about building one house but a number of different people building their own house exactly how they want it. But if you look at the communities that are working in the internet space, those are the ones that are successful.

Using mobile to unite multiple formats

MobileIndustry.biz has posted excerpts from an interview with Electronics Arts heavyweight Javier Ferreira.

Ferreira says that the mobile phone is essential for uniting communities of players and their home consoles. “There’s a lot of work to be done by all the players in this industry towards unleashing the connectivity which mobile can offer us – and from EA’s perspective to link franchises and different versions of a game across formats,” he said. “The community focused component is going to be about how the consumer is playing The Sims on mobile, and how they communicate and speak with the people playing The Sims on DS, PC or PlayStation 3.”

The rest of the article details how to build a community, as well as the technical difficulties in doing so. The full text of the interview will be online some time next week.
