Gmail for mobile 2.0 - BlackBerry and Java rejoice

Gmail for mobile has gone 2.0 and there are a ton of updates. The new Gmail mobile is directed at J2ME and BlackBerry devices. Here are the highlights:

  • Overall performance improvement: You should experience significant raw speed improvement, smoother scrolling, and no freezing.
  • Multiple accounts management: If you have both a Gmail and Google Apps email account, you can easily switch between them quickly. You will no longer have to use two different mobile apps to access personal and work emails.

    In order for a device to provide the best mobile entertainment possible, it needs to have a well-rounded hardware and software combination. As the iPhone has proved, it isn’t a matter of breaking the bank on hardware and the software market can really make a device.

    In this article, I’ll be breaking down the HTC Touch HD with respect to its entertainment potential. The theory, is that processor strength, video resolution, camera, user interface and software will make a device entertaining. Let’s see how the HTC Touch HD does.

    Vodafone to provide content at TBA gigs


    Roving bands of “Bluetooth teams” will be spreading content around at the Vodafone TBA concerts being held in Edinburgh this summer. The concert kicks off on June 1st, and Vodafone will be on the scene, giving mobile phone users access to the latest videos from performing artists, as well a a Java guide showing play times, band biographies, and images. The images will include live pictures taken from other areas of the concert, amongst other things.

    Motorola announces MOTODEV developer challenge

    Motorola has announced the launch of the MOTODEV challenge, a contest which will reward two developers with the chance to have their mobile game published by I-play.

    Open to all developers on Motorola’s MOTODEV site (which you can sign up to for free), the contest is designed to recognize the efforts of independent developers who are trying to code “the next big thing” in mobile gaming. Developers have until August 10th to submit their game in one of two categories: Best Java Software Game and Best Windows Mobile Game. The top two games will be published by I-play, while the runners up in each category will get a chance to meet with the judging panel and receive feedback on their game.

    David Gosen, I-play CEO, spoke about the contest:

    “I-play is delighted to be sponsoring the MOTODEV Game Developer Challenge. Gaming development is an industry that’s fueled by creativity and this competition rewards that vision. It’s not only a great opportunity for developers to show off their talents, but also catch the attention of the entire mobile gaming world.”

    HeroCraft releases Kamikaze 2: The Way of the Monk

    HeroCraft has announced the release of Kamikaze 2: The Way of the Monk, a role playing game set in medieval Japan.

    The game features 4 characters with their own mix of weapons and stats, a large variety of weapons and armor, 10 quests spread throughout 10 areas, and a veritable legion of enemies to fight.

    HeroCraft promises around four hours of gameplay. The Java-based game is available now for a large number of handhelds, in English, Russian, Polish, Spanish, and Czech.

    Of all the plaforms that you currently support, is BlackBerry the main focus of your company?

    John: We have in-house tehnology that allows us to support a wide array of platforms including Java, Brew and Windows Mobile. Within Java we support some specialized platforms like the BlackBerry and Sidekick. Indeed BlackBerry is part of our core business strategy as it provides us a stable and significant source of revenue
