Japan’s NTT DoCoMo developing an Android device

With Android UI

Japan’s NTT DoCoMo have put out some incredible concept devices and proven their ability to think outside of the box when it comes to mobile phones. According to the Business Standard, DoCoMo is planning an Android device next year. The device will be co-developed with Korean telecom KT Freetel of which DoCoMo owns 10%.

Being the first Android handset in Japan, there are huge expectations. With a country that has such an incredible mobile educated population, combined with a completely open platform, I’m hoping Japanese consumers and developers will push Android to its limits. The phone is also expected to be about 20% cheaper than other smartphones because of the savings with an open source OS. Stay tuned!

Square Enix launches Final Fantasy VII: Snowboarding on DoCoMo

How amazing was FF7 and all the mini games? That was by far one of the best RPG games I’ve ever played along with Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. Finally, Square Enix has launched Final Fantasy VII: Snowboarding but too bad it’s only available on the DoCoMo network. So if you’re in Japan and want a sweet mobile game, drop the $3 and pick up this minigame.

DoCoMo and Fujitsu touch screen QWERTY flip-phone concept device

Cool DoCoMo and Fujitsu concept phone

I’m a huge fan of Japanese concept phones. This latest one from DoCoMo and Fujitsu, features separate screen and keyboard panels that can be split into 2 pieces. Once you’ve split the 2 pieces apart, you can rearrange them as a standard flip-phone, or snapped together to form an X1 or Touch Pro-esque landscape QWERTY variation. The 2 components are linked via Magnets and communicate via Bluetooth. When are these phones coming to North America? Soon I hope.
