Carleton University technology to increase mobile battery life

Atif Samim, a student at Carelton University, just a few minutes from QuicklyBored headquarters in Ottawa Canada, has developed new antenna technology that will increase battery life. The technology is expected to reduce power consumption by nearly 92%. The technology seems fairly simple which is usually a staple of anything brilliant. The system involves disconnecting the antenna from the rest of the components in the device.

Because the antenna is separated from the other components, Shamim’s system uses very short range wireless transmitting micro-antennas within the chip design to handle the communications. Shamim has already filed for patents to protect his invention. I can’t wait until this tech is implemented. Are you listening Steve Jobs?

  • Rogers admits $26,000 iPhone bill is an error

    Rogers iPhone

Steve Szikora from Brantford Ontario Canada received a $26,000 iPhone bill from Rogers and needless to say he was PISSED. The bill came after only 3 months of iPhone usage and was clearly a mistake. After trying to negotiate with the robots in customer service, he went to the local papers who in turn, got the attention of Elizabeth Hamilton, director of corporate communications. She wasn’t about to argue over something that was so obviously an epic fail. “There is no debate, there is an error on his bill. We would like to apologize to the customer and correct the error immediately” she said.

Use your iPhone in winter with Freehands leather gloves

    Freehands leather gloves

Being from Canada and having the winter season soon approaching, I’m curious to see how my iPhone will hold up. I remember hearing back in the first gen iPhone days that cold weather makes the screen useless. I’ll be able to finally test this out. OR, I could just grab a pair of these Freehands leather gloves, and not worry about a thing. I know this has sort of been done before with Hot Paws and their mittens that convert to biker gloves, but this is for the tech geek in all of us.

Home Grown Innovations at the Code Factory - Ottawa, Canada

    Home Grown Innovations, Ottawa Canada

If you’re in the Ottawa, Canada area today, I hope you’ll be attending Home Grown Innovations. It will be a great opportunity to talk shop with local gaming companies. We’ll be filming at the event and it should be a great show. BTW, I realize the futility in posting about an event hours before it happens, but it will be a regular thing. You can catch the next. Looking forward to the following companies:

    · Fuel Industries
    · Magmic Games
    · DISTIL Interactive
    · Sylien Games
    · Head Games

CTIA 2008 comes to an end - Canada here we come

    Toronto Canada

Although the consensus around CTIA this year was that the show was a little smaller than usual, we still had a blast. We met some great companies and attended some great parties (Glu!). Stay tuned to QuicklyBored.com because I’ll be flying to Korea in about a week and there will be great content on the site.

CTIA San Francisco - Canadians in America

    Fried Twinkies!

Can you believe they have fried Twinkies?!

We’re staying at the Pacific Tadewinds hostel between the financial district and China town..

I’m currently torn about the whole micro-blogging business. Obviously QuicklyBored will be bringing you nothing but the best news, interviews, pics and video from CTIA, but that’s a long ways away. So instead, QB will be running as usual but with a much more personal vibe. So continuing on that trend, I’ve taken some time to post some Americana that, as a Canadian, I find really funny. Take the above pic for example. Fried Twinkies? Yum?

Canadian iPhone users not taking advantage Rogers data plan

    iPhone from Rogers

Back when the iPhone launched in Canada, I did some interviews with CBC Radio where they asked me what I thought of the new iPhone data plan. They were expecting the usual “Good! Rogers is a big corporate corporation with money so they’re evil! They caved because they knew we were coming!” But I really didn’t feel that way. There was so much consumer anger going around at the time but it wasn’t totally merited. I told CBC Radio that the new plan was a ton of data at a great price, and that I didn’t really see many users using up the full package. Consumer education in this country is such that you can’t expect many customers to use their phone enough to burn through that much data.

BlackBerry Bold on Rogers going for $649.99 w/o contract

    BlackBerry Bold pricing

If for some reason you wanted to spend more than the $399.99 asking price on a three-year contract with Rogers the BlackBerry 9000 (like to roam with an AT&T plan instead of going with Rogers), it looks like you’ll be able to grab the Bold for $649.99 without any strings attached. That’s the standard $250 that usually gets subsidied on BlackBerrys, but when you take a look at the BlackBerry 8220 getting knocked down to $50 from $599.99, you have to wonder how much more favourably Rogers wants the iPhone to look versus the Bold. The Rogers outlet here in Ottawa has the Bold on display, which makes me think that it’s ready for sale, but still nothing on an announcement, or any presence in the online store. Full release could be available as soon as tomorrow. The big question is are you getting one?

Canadian minister on incoming SMS charges: “Tough luck”

    Telus and Bell incoming messages

Jim Prentice, Canadian Minister of Industry, recently met up with execs from Telus and Bell to discuss the upcoming $.15 charges on incoming SMS messages. In the end, Prentice, who had previously had serious concerns over the move by carriers has since backpedalled, and is advising unsatisfied customers to find alternatives.

“Given these undertakings by Bell Mobility and Telus, I would encourage consumers dissatisfied with existing plans to seek alternatives. The telecommunications market in Canada is dynamic — choice is available,”

Like who, Rogers? A single alternative isn’t exactly what you’d call choice, let alone personify a dynamic market. To be honest, it’s hardly about finding good wireless rates in Canada anymore, it’s just about finding the one who will screw you over the least. If you’re as unhappy about this as we are, the NDP party is running a petition to fight the new SMS charges. Bell’s charges have already kicked in and Telus will commence the gouging on Aug. 24.
