iFart iPhone app sets record sales on App Store

iFart is a great example of what sells on the App Store. It’s the perfect app for conspicuous consumption. The app has had huge success with respect to sales as well, bringing in a reported $10,000 in a single day.

“Joel Comm, developer of iFart Mobile, published download statistics of his app, and this week it stood at No. 1 overall with over 13,000 downloads.”

If anything, this should serve as an example of how to make money with an iPhone app.

SimCity now available for the iPhone

EA has launched an iPhone version of the classic game SimCity. SimCity is what started it all. Before virtual worlds were popular, SimCity had everyone going nuts over the idea of making their own city. Created by Will Wright and originally released for the Mac and Amiga in 1989, the game has been a hit release after release.

SimCity is now available for $9.99USD through the App Store.

Katamari now available for the iPhone

I love the idea of console games coming to mobile. Back when QB was first starting out, we were solely about mobile games. The problem was, they all totally sucked. It made for a really cynical blog that pretty much only doled out bad reviews. Most of our hate was concentrated on the RAZR and every game that came with it. I constantly talked about how the day will come when mobile gaming will be fun and we’ll have genuine console ports. It’s incredible that I’m still blogging and that day has come.

Katamari is now available for the iPhone. Heck yeah! The game costs $8 on the App Store and although I haven’t played it yet, it seems to have most of the functionality of the original game.

The latest attempt at copy and paste for the iPhone

Pastebud is the latest attempt to bring cut and paste to the iPhone. The app is a bookmarklet/webapp combo with a fairly interesting setup process. What you do is head to Pastebud’s site, drag the bookmarklets to your browser toolbar, and sync your device. Once you’ve installed the bookmarks (and probably re-arranged them higher in your list), you can head to any web page containing text you want to copy to a web form or email. Hit the “COPY” bookmark, and all the page text gets sent to Pastebud and put into a JavaScript-powered applet, where you select the particular text to copy by tapping and dragging to select. Seems like a pretty intense system doesn’t it? The app works but can we please just get an OS update that does all this natively? The app costs $5 and it has a somewhat annoying feature that involves attaching a “copied from Pastebud” note at the end of every paste. No thanks.

3D images on the iPhone by Spatial View

At the 3D Entertainment Summit last week, James Stewart, producer/director at Geneva Film Co. claimed he had “the world’s first 3D iPhone.” What he really had was an advanced copy of 3Dee!oadr by Spatial View.

3Dee!oadr gives you the option to select side-by-side images from Flickr and convert them on the fly to an anaglyph you can view with 3D glasses. It also lets you to search, view, and manage your Flickr account from your iPhone. You can even save Flickr images to your iPhone for later viewing.

The app launched a few days ago and I’m not sure if you can say “the world’s first 3D iPhone” because it’s very misleading. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but for some reason I think you would have to have the ability to create 3D without using special glasses in order to make such a claim.

In any case, 3Dee!oadr is available on the app store right now for $1.99.

SMS Touch for iPhone allows for email to SMS messaging

One of the major complaints you hear about the iPhone is the lack of consistency with things such as landscape keyboard mode. You can go landscape keyboard while using Safari, but landscape SMS is not possible. That was until SMS Touch launched on the App Store, offering the ability to landscape keyboard messages that get sent via email and can be responded to in SMS. There is also a cost saving element here. Since the app costs $5, you’ll be able to use it and avoid paying for unlimited text messaging services which can run you an extra $15 depending on the carrier.

Gameloft’s Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes for the iPhone

Gameloft’s Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes is a great take on first-person shooting for the iPhone. I’ve seen a lot of companies attempt to make a good FPS but there are many limitations. The most basic form of FPS involves a virtual d-pad on the touchscreen. This isn’t the best way to do controls because the d-pad requires the ability to slide your fingers between directions, and with a touchscreen, you’re more pressing individual directions. Diagonal is difficult too. The other FPS I’ve seen involves using the accelerometer to move the individual. This isn’t perfect either because it requires you tilt the screen making it difficult to focus on what you’re trying to shoot. Gameloft’s approach is a touchscreen style thumbstick, much like the one you would find on an XBOX 360. Watch the video to see it in action.

Brothers in Arms is available on the App Store for $9.99

Free iPhone apps and games - huge discounts and savings

Steve Jobs

TouchArcade has done a great job of putting together a list of discounted iPhone apps and games. The list includes a ton of games that have become free as well as some significant price drops. I haven’t done a Black Friday post yet so this is it. Because I’ve spent the last 3 Thanksgivings in Asia and the Middle East, to be totally honest I just found out about Black Friday about a week ago and I still don’t really get it. Why do people want to shop after Thanksgiving? Are you drunk on turkey and need to spend cash? Anyways, great prices after the jump.t
