BlackBerry Pluto: The BlackBerry Bold touch screen device.
I’ve been reading a lot of confusion on the web about the BlackBerry Magnum and the BlackBerry Pluto. Many are confused which BlackBerry touch screen the respective codenames are associated with.
BlackBerry Magnum (9220)
This touch screen device will be modeled on the BlackBerry Curve 8900 design, but will include 3G.
BlackBerry Pluto (9900)
Again a touch screen device, but this one will be modeled on the BlackBerry Bold design.

QuicklyBored reader Pascal tipped me off to this iPhone unlocking service. Apparently he’s had it unlocked for the past 6 weeks and it’s working just fine. His comment was in response to my posting about Rebel Sim which also purports to unlock the iPhone 3G. Apparently that service doesn’t work so well and this is the good stuff. Let me know if anyone feels the same way.
I’ve had an iPhone 3G for a few months now and the battery life is starting to really get on my nerves. If I use it like a normal phone, I’ll probably get 2 days of life out of it. But who wants to do that? If I’m watching YouTube videos and using the iPod feature, I rarely get to 6pm. With Mophie’s Juice Pack, you get up to 350 additional hours of standby, up to 6 hours of 3G talk time (or 12 hours on 2G) and another 6 hours of web surfing. Now THAT is the type of iPhone usage I want.

Touch screen smartphones are going to dominate the consumer market with their friendly UI, innovative games, true HTML browsing and general rich media capabilities. The market has now hit a point where there are 3 incredible touch screen devices aimed directly at prosumers. The HTC Dream G1, the iPhone 3G and the BlackBerry Storm. Of course there are more touch screen phones like the Instinct and the HTC Touch Diamond, but the 3 phones I have chosen are direct competitors. It’s an exciting time because no matter how the market divides itself, rest assured the smartphone consumer market will explode over the next few years. The questions I would like to answer are: what phone is best for who and why?

There are some great new accessories by Griffin Technology that have been recently released. Take for example the above product, WindowSeat, which mounts your iPhone to your car’s windshield or dashboard.

Bruce Wayne obviously has an iPhone 3G. He probably has like 2 of them and an iPod Touch. The problem is he can only rock his BatRest for the iPhone in the Batcave, otherwise people figure it out. It’s a good way for him to take a break from work. He just sets his iPhone down by his Mac in landscape mode and puts on a good movie.
If you’re wondering, Seskimo makes the hardware for him and they come in different colors such as translucent, white, and black. If you want to pick one up for yourself, the slim (wallet sized - 85mm x 54mm) BatRest can be yours for $3.95.

I feel bad for the Internet famous iPhone Girl. If you haven’t heard, she’s the cute girl who works at the iPhone plant in China and had her pic taken and shipped with a line of iPhones. She’s overwhelmed with her overnight celeb status and told the press she’s “really scared by the media,” and might quit! So lets just give her some space.
Oh wait, I’m part of the problem aren’t I?

Back when the iPhone launched in Canada, I did some interviews with CBC Radio where they asked me what I thought of the new iPhone data plan. They were expecting the usual “Good! Rogers is a big corporate corporation with money so they’re evil! They caved because they knew we were coming!” But I really didn’t feel that way. There was so much consumer anger going around at the time but it wasn’t totally merited. I told CBC Radio that the new plan was a ton of data at a great price, and that I didn’t really see many users using up the full package. Consumer education in this country is such that you can’t expect many customers to use their phone enough to burn through that much data.

Zimbra mobile, the open source messaging and collaboration suite, now supports the iPhone 3G. Zimbra lets you OTA sync email, calendars, and contacts as well as a photo sync feature that allows photos associated with iPhone contacts to sync with the Zimbra Address book. I haven’t tried it yet, but it could be a decent alternative to MobileMe which has had some issues.
