3D images on the iPhone by Spatial View

At the 3D Entertainment Summit last week, James Stewart, producer/director at Geneva Film Co. claimed he had “the world’s first 3D iPhone.” What he really had was an advanced copy of 3Dee!oadr by Spatial View.

3Dee!oadr gives you the option to select side-by-side images from Flickr and convert them on the fly to an anaglyph you can view with 3D glasses. It also lets you to search, view, and manage your Flickr account from your iPhone. You can even save Flickr images to your iPhone for later viewing.

The app launched a few days ago and I’m not sure if you can say “the world’s first 3D iPhone” because it’s very misleading. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but for some reason I think you would have to have the ability to create 3D without using special glasses in order to make such a claim.

In any case, 3Dee!oadr is available on the app store right now for $1.99.

Mobile Content 2008: Best Mobile Game

The Best Mobile Game category was taken by Sketcher 2. Sketcher 2 is a really great game that involves simple keypad buttons and fast-paced action. Personally, I’ve always felt that a good mobile game creates an experience that is entertaining, but doesn’t require too much user input. It should almost play the game for you. For example, one button games don’t require much input, but they can provide a ton of fun by what that one button does. Sketcher 2 doesn’t require many buttons, but the cinematic effects that follow a simple button push, make the game incredibly fun. According to Mobile Content 2008, a good mobile:

“is regarded as the most popular content in the mobile era, delivering fun and enjoyment to users. Using 3D and broadband technologies, it provides not only virtual reality but also connected experience with other synchronous users. The category encompasses all the games made fit on mobile handsets and devices.

Mobile 3D shooter byQplaze - Heroes of War: Sand Storm

I’m not even going to write anything about this. Qplaze speak for themselves:

Wars are never forgotten. They leave scars on the earth and in human memory - scars that are impossible to erase. Sooner or later they show through - through the frightful findings in the ruins of the ancient cities, dusty folders in the archives, nightmares of the whole generations. In retrospect we see: the whole history of mankind is a history of wars. Spears changes into missiles, and swords into automatic rifles, but over a period of thousands of years the main remained the same - the essence of the war.

    Computer-quality games on mobile phones

    Second Life
A new startup called Vollee has found a way to adapt and display computer-quality games, like Second Life, right on your phone. A video of the technology shows off a player running around the world of Second Life and chatting with inhabitants. The frame rate is less than perfect, but the company is in its infancy and Second Life never runs that well anyway. Definitely something to keep an eye on, especially as they can do the same trick with other games.

    Unity 3D to support iPhone

The Unity 3D engine at work
The team at Games On Deck posted about the recent announcement from Unity that their high-end 3D engine is being ported to run on the iPhone. The 3D engine is aimed at independent developers and smaller game companies that don’t have the resources to roll their own engine, a long and complicated procedure. They’ve already released a beta of the engine, so hopefully we’ll start seeing some cool indie 3D games once the App Store launches.

    Fishlabs releases Powerboat Challenge

Arjan over at the Mobile Games Blog found out that Fishlabs has released a new racing game called Powerboat Challenge. Hop into a powerboat and race against others through narrow rivers, everywhere from lush jungles to arctic wastelands. The game uses a powerful 3D engine, and Fishlabs offers a bunch of customization options to make the game run on slower phones. It’s currently available for many models of Nokia and Sony-Ericsson phones. Hey, maybe we can get another weekly contest out of it.
