I just attended the session “Hollywood and mobile content” which featured John Smelzer, SVP & GM, Mobile, FOX Interactive Media, and Andrew Wallenstein, Deputy Editor, The Hollywood Reporter. Viva Vision is a Santa Monica based company that provides content for slideshows, video on demand, and live video for mobile phones. They already have over 250 million subscribers worldwide and were recently named to the Inc. 500 List which recognizes the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. We’re keeping an eye on this company because video streaming is growing quickly in North America and with all the advances in data plans, we can expect some great content coming to mobile.

It looks as though Hungary will be getting mobile TV. The service, DVB-H will likely start later this year in and around Budapest with approximately 16% coverage. Other cities will be getting the service later on including the area surrounding Lake Balaton by the end of 2009. The coverage will be 30%, which is expected to reach 50% by 2012.

On August 25th, Sony Ericsson wil be launching PlayNow Arena, its media download site. On the day of the launch, the site will be offering 1 million, DRM-free songs (ramping up to 5 million) from Sony BMG, Warner Music, and EMI. It will also offer games, ringtones, applications, and themes for your mobile. Prices are going to be comparable to iTunes at $0.99 / €0.99 per song except for in Sweden where songs will cost a little more, close to $1.50 USD. We’re anxious to see how the download service does and I’m sure the launch day will be a good indicator of future success.

Fox has recently bought the mobisode The Cell, a 20 x 2-minute drama series about a man who finds himself locked in a lawless prison with no idea of how or why he got there. He’s got a mobile phone with a stranger on the other end a la Phone Booth meets Prison Break.
One of the most annoying things about writing this article is that the website for this mobisode, www.thecell.tv, isn’t available to anyone in North America. Can someone from the UK send screenshots or something?
