On August 25th, Sony Ericsson wil be launching PlayNow Arena, its media download site. On the day of the launch, the site will be offering 1 million, DRM-free songs (ramping up to 5 million) from Sony BMG, Warner Music, and EMI. It will also offer games, ringtones, applications, and themes for your mobile. Prices are going to be comparable to iTunes at $0.99 / €0.99 per song except for in Sweden where songs will cost a little more, close to $1.50 USD. We’re anxious to see how the download service does and I’m sure the launch day will be a good indicator of future success.
Mobile TV has become much more affordable with the launch of the LG Invision, the 3rd phone on AT&T to support mobile TV. The phone has a great look to it, sleek and thin, and offers all the multimedia functionality that we love. For $99 you can’t go wrong.
Fox has recently bought the mobisode The Cell, a 20 x 2-minute drama series about a man who finds himself locked in a lawless prison with no idea of how or why he got there. He’s got a mobile phone with a stranger on the other end a la Phone Booth meets Prison Break.
One of the most annoying things about writing this article is that the website for this mobisode, www.thecell.tv, isn’t available to anyone in North America. Can someone from the UK send screenshots or something?
T-Mobile has learned a lot from the iPhone and it may be making some moves that are about to make other carriers punch themselves square in the jaw and wonder why they didn’t do something similar.
This fall, T-Mobile will be giving its mobile content purchasing system a complete overhaul. Customers will be able to download apps much in the same way that iTunes provies its apps. Rather than providing software to customers based on big corporate deals and handshakes, T-Mobile will be providing the apps based on an open community of developers.
Watching hardcore porn on your mobile phone is a little taboo. Well a lot taboo. It reminds me of that skit David Cross did where he points out the complete absurdity behind selling hardcore porn magazines at the airport. Who reads porn on the plane? You’d have to be a complete sociopath or have a serious addiction to masturbation. Because that’s what porno is for right? Masturbating? I mean, I don’t think people are buying “Giant Fuck Jugs” for the “Letters to the Editor” section. Anyways, Thumbplay has got hot girls taking their clothes off for your phone.
Windows Mobile has incredible potential for watching movies among other things. On your next 5 hour business flight, instead of sleeping you could be watching Fight Club. Sound good? I’ll show you how to watch DivX movies on your Windows Mobile device.
The coolest thing about having a Windows Mobile device, and the reason why it is your endless source of mobile entertainment, is having the ability to watch ANY movie (in DivX format). Before you leave on the next business trip, it will be important to find the movies you want to take. And then we’ll need to setup your Windows Mobile OS with the apps needed to run them. In this guide, I’ll show you what programs are needed and how to set them up.
Wow. I had no idea that phone radiation was so bad you can make popcorn with it. I bet when 10G phones hit the market, not only will we all have terrible brain cancer but we’ll also develop crazy hand cancer just from holding the phones. Maybe carriers will make you sign phone contracts that must be passed on to your children after your device kills you.

Cruising through the Smoke Labs office to take a gander at MediaSync
Supposedly the BlackBerry/iTunes syncing utility that was making the rounds last month is ready for primetime, and could be popping up for public download from www.blackberry.com/mediasync at some point today. iTunes support certainly makes BlackBerrys more viable as your number one media player - combined with increasing size of memory cards and high quality stereo Bluetooth headsets, it’s hard to go wrong. If you didn’t have time to nab MediaSync when it was available briefly, today could be your big chance, so keep your eyes peeled.
