Although this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a product like this, it’s good to know that people are still plugging away at turning the iPod Touch into an iPhone. Back in December, we heard about a company called Truphone, which also provides VoIP services for your smartphone.
In theory, having a VoIP device sounds good. The problem is the reliability of the service has consistently been lackluster on mobile. I’ve yet to try a service that can provide the sort of reliability you would expect from Vonage ported over to mobile.
“With JAJAH, consumers would only need a Wi-Fi connection, no SIM card or contract. JAJAH’s IP communications platform gives its partners everything they need to launch the service immediately. That includes the application itself and the entire suite of management services from termination of calls, quality control, billing and processing of payments in 200 countries around the world.”
Personally, I’m an iPhone user so I don’t have much of a need for this, but I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve tried it.
Most companies who are BlackBerry-centric have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It’s the ultimate solution for sync’ing your device with your contacts, calendars and events wirelessly with your desktop/laptop. But what about that growing consumer market? The average consumer is clearly not going to spend the cash or energy to set up their own BES, but they still need to sync their device. One option available to you is Nexthaus.
Among the many benefits of having a sync’ed lifestyle is that your life stays organized. Having all your calendars and contacts sync’ed wirelessly means you can effectively manage your life and stay mobile. Take for example the following situation:
You’re at a dinner party and one of the guests just so happens to work for that store you’ve been meaning to go to. The guest offers his contact info and tells you to come by the store Monday morning. When the conversation is done, you log the contact info into your phone and set a calendar event for the date, time and location of the store. Sync’ing this info will mean you’ll instantly know of schedule conflicts and you’ll be reminded when the time comes. Being sync’ed means more effective networking.
Nexthaus is a company we’ve been working with recently and they have great software to sync your device wirelessly. The first thing you need to do is get a copy of the software. Go to their homepage and select SyncJe for BlackBerry. Now follow these simple instructions and you’re set.
If you know of other companies that offer similar software, we’d love to hear about them. Leave a comment and we’ll follow up.
UK-based FoneJackerHacker, have modified a 1940’s-style rotary phone to serve as an iPhone dock and speakerphone system. The system isn’t quite a working phone yet but the company is working on it. “I am working on a version that has a microphone on the handset and with the use of an iPhone .app that I am developing you will be able to use this as a handset for the iPhone, or as a headset.” Keep up the good work!
The iPhone 3G has been finally unlocked. Previously, we’ve seen stories of iPhone unlocking methods that involve taking apart your iPhone and doing some wild Frankenstein-like soldering. The Dev-Team have announced that they’ve sucessfully unlocked an iPhone 3G and will make it available via PwnageTool and QuickPwn sometime around the New Year. Seriously, these guys are wild. What can’t they do?
The HTC Touch is a great phone. Problem is, Windows Mobile can be incredibly frustrating for the average consumer. The Microsoft approach is great for anyone who is a pro user. It provides you with every possible option and lets you choose your experience. It’s the complete opposite of Apple and the iPhone. Mac has always been described to me as “the computer for people who don’t understand or care about computers.” Maybe having Android on the HTC Touch is a good idea. I’d have to try it out myself.
The “Midnight” is an all black iPhone made by diamond jewelers De Vere’s of London. The new iPhone has a deep black bezel surrounding the front screen to match the rear case. The phone is absolutely insanely expensive too. The device, exclusive to De Vere’s, costs £799 (USD$1199). You can also purchase the bezel and retrofit an existing iPhone for £299 (USD$449).
The guys over at Phandroid have found a group of unused icons on the Android Market. The icons suggest that we’ll be seeing ringtones, wallpapers, and Google Checkout support in the near future. Expect all the ringtones and wallpapers to be governed by the carriers and therefore completely lame. As we all know, carriers have opposite of the Midas Touch. Everything they touch turns to garbage.
Every BlackBerry user has a special love for their BlackBerry theme of choice. As one of the few ways users can personalize their BlackBerry, it’s a pretty significant statement: do you choose something trendy like an iBerry theme, or relive your youth with a Super Mario Bros theme?
We were recently contacted by DreamTheme, a company that is looking to evolve BlackBerry personalization beyond simple themes with LiveScreens. LiveScreens are essentially animated homescreen applications, but there’s more to them than meets the eye. Hit the jump and come check out one of the coolest new things you can put on your BlackBerry.
Erica Sadun from Ars Technica, found the undocumented TV-out feature in the latest version of the iPhone SDK. The featured gives you the ability to export video to a connected TV. Although the feature disables the touchscreen, it has great potential for bringing movies from your iPhone to any TV. The output is a much higher resolution that the iPhone screen, which may lead to frame-rate drops, but as you can see from the video, the concept is still impressive. Yanko design posted a cool concept of an app and accessory combo that would help your golf swing and use the kinetic energy of your swing to charge your iPhone. As much as I want to buy this right now, it’s just a concept. The design is by Mac Funamizu, and shows a very environmentally friendly way of charging your iPhone while impressing your coworkers with your amazing golf swing.
