While reading HoFo, I found someone looking for a comparison of the HTC Touch Pro and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. The post is interesting because the author outlines exactly what they’re looking for in a phone. I think it’s a real sign of the times that a decent camera is on the top of the list.
- 3MP camera or higher (flash is even better!)
- Keyboard of some sort (QWERTY or normal keypad is fine but I txt ALOT)
- WiFi (absolute must, I do not intend on using a data plan)
- Good web browser (as close to iPhone experience as I can get)
- Must work internationally (in China, at least)
- I do not care about 3G
- Affordable mix of quality + price
I’ve put together a quick comparison of the Xperia X1 and the HTC Touch Pro with respect to which one I think this author should purchase.

The HTC Touch Pro is the QWERTY solution for those who don’t like typing on a touch screen. With a slide out QWERTY, you get the great consumer experience of a touch screen device but you’re still able to get some work done.
This phone definitely satisfies the above authors needs and wants with WiFi, HSPA with a solid 7.2Mbps on the downstream, Bluetooth, 2.8-inch VGA display, Windows Mobile 6.1 featuring HTC’s TouchFLO 3D interface, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a half gig of ROM, and 288MB of RAM.
The no contract price for the HTC Touch Pro is about $450. Let’s see how this compares to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.

The Xperia X1 is another Windows Mobile device that has an interesting design and also features a touch screen with a QWERTY keyboard. The media capabilities are also comparable to that of the HTC with the Xperia packing a 3-inch wide VGA (800 x 480) touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera (with photo light), A2DP Bluetooth, aGPS, WiFi, and microSD.
Not having an accelerometer or TouchFLO 3D is the deal breaker here. A good user interface is needed to make Windows Mobile more user friendly and the HTC Touch Pro makes an attempt at this. The Xperia will likely have an ugly UI.
The price on the Xperia, although not officially known, ranges from a little more expensive, to bank breaking more expensive. CellHut placed the X1’s value at just $699 while WirelessGalaxy wants you to believe that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is worth a whopping $1428.
After considering both phones, the HTC Touch Pro is the better choice. Although the hardware specs are very similar, the user interface and price make the HTC Touch Pro a better consumer choice.
