QuicklyBored in South Korea - A note on mobile supply and demand

The Korean mobile scene

The supply of phones is absolutely astounding in South Korea. On virtually every corner there is a phone shop. The shops open relatively early and stay open very late. Some of them are branded by the telecom and others are just general phone stores. While here, I went over to a place called Yongsan Electronics Market to find the coolest phones possible. It’s the largest electronics market in Asia with over 5000 stores.

Yongsan Electronics Market

If you want to be truly impressed by phone supply, Yongsan Electronics Market is the place to be. It is absolutely huge. While browsing, you quickly realize the supply is misleading. Although they have an incredible supply of phones, there isn’t much variety.

In North America, I believe we have a wider range of phones, but fewer models. The fact that there isn’t much variation in the technology could be in part due to the fact that Koreans are a very homogeneous society. With a homogeneous society, there is little room for various lifestyles demanding different features from their mobile devices. I took some video of the market so stay tuned for it to be published.

Also, I got a glimpse at some of the best phones currently available in South Korea, so expect that video soon too!
