African teenager hacks his phone to create vehicle anti-theft device

Africans know how to rise above abject poverty to make sick gadgets.

The above video documents a teen from Mombasa who hacked his phone to create a really cool anti-theft device for his car. The way it works is that when someone tries to start the car who hasn’t proven themselves to be the driver, the car will automatically call the owner’s mobile phone and the owner can then choose to shut down the vehicle remotely. Sweet!

Your World Games releases The Shroud on Helio

Your World Games\' The Shroud

Isn’t Helio gone or about to go? I’m pretty sure Virgin sealed the deal but whatevs. A while back when I interviewed Your World Games about The Shroud, I didn’t get an answer, but things are trucking along it seems. Along with the Helio release of The Shroud is the GPS Challenge, available for all GPS-enabled Helio devices, which will allow players to physically locate Breaches in real-life locations. This is a super sweet and innovative function but I’m really lazy so I’d probably suck at it.

How to protect your phone against water damage

Golden Shellback Waterproof Coating from gCaptain.com on Vimeo.

It’s easy with a thousand bucks and a miracle gel

Golden Shellback is a coating that keeps your mobile device (and any other electronic) free of water damage forever. It’s insanely expensive at $1000 but the above video almost makes it worth it. The video even showcases a BlackBerry Pearl, which makes me wonder, how did they protect the trackball and keep it spinning?

Innovative cameraphone FPS for Palm Treo

Shoot the aliens right off your girlfriend’s face

We’ve heard about this technology before but the above is a great video demo’ing mobile gaming on top of real life via the cameraphone. The idea is great. You walk around shooting targets and enemies that are superimposed on what you see through the camera.

This is exactly what is needed in a good mobile game. The keypad is garbage so it’s important to look to other ways to use the phone and gaming together in one big happy hug of greatness.

hitachi mobile electronic ink phones

The latest Casio Hitachi mobile devices being launched in Japan use E Ink Vizplex Imaging Film technology to display a ton of cool artsy images on the outside of the clamshell phones. These images make the phone very sleek in the way that they constantly change and have a simple yet classy design.

“We wanted features such as outdoor sunlight readability, 180 degree viewing angle, extremely thin, rugged, flexible display that consumed very little power,” said Satoshi Shirasawa, Marketing Manager for CHMC. “E Ink’s electrophoretic display technology provided all that and more, something we could not get from other display technologies.”

Quake being ported to iPhone by id Software

We’ve seen videos of Quake being ported to the iPod touch and the whole time most of us wondered where id Software was on all of this but now we know: they were sitting in the boardroom thinking “damn, why didn’t we think of that?”

John Carmack, id Software’s founder and technical director, said he regrets that scheduling conflicts prevented id from having an iPhone game ready in time for the App Store launch earlier this month. However, he added: “We have a title we want to develop exclusively for iPhone… I’m not announcing anything specifically, but it would be a graphical tour de force.”
