Stephen and I spoke about the benefits of using Innaworks to port your J2ME applications and games to BREW.

Sony Ericsson announced it will team with R&B superstar Usher to promote SE’s Walkman music phones. The deal includes sponsorship for Usher’s North American tour as well his upcoming album Here I Stand dropping on May 27th.

MobiTV has announced a partnership with cross-platform software developer UIEvolution to bring you video-on-demand and live TV for your car. The service is called UIE Connected Car and it promises personalized content for the driver as well as entertainment for the rear-seat passengers. The service runs on targeted advertising. In mid-April, Qualcomm announced its rival MediaFLO platform will also enable in-vehicle mobile TV applications. Is anyone else scared right now? Live TV while driving? I’m actually not even leaving the office until 3am when most of the traffic is gone.
Qplaze announces development of 3D version of Age of Heroes – the most popular strategy/RPG for mobile phone. Age of Heroes 3D will keep all features of previous versions of the game, but will also allow to realize lots of new features, available only in PC games. Nokia has upset its subscribers because of its strategy to force consumers to re-purchase N-Gage titles when they switch Nokia handsets. The terms and conditions do state that, “Content shall be… limited to one private installation on one N-Gage compatible Nokia device only.” I can see how this would be a profitable venture in the short term but long term it may cause subscribers to move away from N-Gage. Mobile games are a tough sell as is and price can easily shake a potential gamer.
The most recent version of the iPhone 2.0 beta has added a “Location Services” feature that encompasses what appears to be GPS-based Google Mapping, along with geotagging for the phone’s camera application. There seems to be a big push in the LBS in the Google behemoth. Recently, we read news about how most of Google Android’s applications were LBS centric. Google seems to really be backing this technology.
Samsung’s Instinct will be available on June 20th. We’re not sure what carriers will be using the phone but it’s clear that Sprint will lead the charge and pump the Instinct into American markets. We’re not sure about pricing but the phone is likely to be a great media device. It’s multimedia specs include MPEG4 and MP3 support, microSD, a 3.1″ touch screen and of course, a 3.5mm headphone jack.
EA has announced that it is acquiring Hands-On Mobile Korea. The terms of the deal were not disclosed but it has been made clear that EA is looking to increase its Asian publishing and development base. The new company will be named EA Mobile Korea. In my opinion, this is a great move for EA because it will help bring some of the innovation in mobile games from Asia to North America.
