Pimping out the Pearl

A BlackBerry Pearl
After reading Kyle’s first impressions on his BlackBerry Curve, I decided I should see what I could improve on my Pearl. I’ve had it for a little while now but haven’t really explored much beyond the basic phone, email, calendar, and task features. Being a gamer at heart, I figured I’d give those a shot first.

If you want BlackBerry games, you can’t really go wrong with Bplay, so I headed over that way and eventually decided on Star Wars: Battle Above Coruscant because I am a huge geek in addition to being a gamer (but I repeat myself).

After you download the game and unzip it on your PC you’re left with a folder which you have to get on your BlackBerry. Install the BlackBerry Desktop Software — it should come on a CD with your phone, but you can always get the latest version here — then plug in your phone and start the software. You might be asked to enter a password if you’ve set one up, otherwise you’ll just see your BlackBerry’s PIN in the Device Connected field at the bottom. Click on the Application Loader button and you’ll see a screen similar to this:

BlackBerry Application Loader

Hit the Add button, navigate to the unzipped folder, and select the Star Wars file. You’ll see it listed as in the screenshot, with Install in the Action field, so click next and the software should work its magic. Once it’s installed your BlackBerry will restart. After it starts up, take a look at your icons and you should see:

A BlackBerry home screen

Huzzah! If you bought it from Bplay’s website you’ll have to enter an activation code, or you can buy it from within your phone and activate it that way. Happy gaming!
