A friend of mine, who shall remain nameless but is a credible source, works in sales at Rogers and came in to chat today. I got him to spill his guts about the coming iPhone and anything else he felt like divulging. I think he had been drinking at lunch and was in a good mood so the floodgates opened and secrets just poured out of him like a smooth Guinness draught.
According to, what should I call him? The Rogers Ninja: the iPhone is going to be released during Q3 of this year. That means early this summer. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this news but it was comforting to know that it is indeed on the way. There have been some problems between Rogers and Apple concerning Apple’s insistence on using iTunes on the iPhone. Rogers has its own way of providing content and it will clearly want to dominate the way in which users get content.
The Rogers Ninja didn’t really specify why Rogers is choosing Q3 to release the iPhone but mentioned that Rogers sales reps are being trained in the new voice and data plans and hardware releases typically come at the same time. BTW, I asked about the potential for an “unlimited” data plan coming soon and he seemed incredibly skeptical. Dang.
Along with the iPhone release, The Rogers Ninja told me that Rogers is going to release the WiFi enabled BlackBerry 8120. This device is much anticipated and should provide quicker data services due to the WiFi as well as UMA (calling over WiFi).

Speaking of UMA, he also started talking about how Rogers in going to offer a wireless VOIP service to its customers. He knows this because the offer has popped up on their internal sales website with a “do not click” advisory. According to the Rogers Ninja, this will be coming out during summer too.
So expect big things to come from Rogers this coming summer. If not, blame the ninja.
