I just decided to check out what the skinny on the iPhone in Canada is and Google was entirely useless. It seems as though there haven’t been any major updates on why we are getting so punked on the iPhone here in the North. Google news even talks about a coming iPhone release in Russia. Really? Russia? That’s just rubbing it in our face.
Even the website iPhoneinCanada has resorted to posting about using the iPhone even though we don’t have them. Everything on the site has become about using an unlocked iPhone. Maybe we should think about boycotting the use of unlocked iPhones just to keep our hard earned dollars away from Apple and Rogers until they finalize the deal we’ve all been waiting for.
It’s annoying that we haven’t heard anything significant in a while considering in January and for the most part of 2007’s Q4 we heard nothing but glory. “It’s on the way!” everyone kept saying. And then came silence.
So what exactly is the hold up? Well there have been a few rumors flying around. The first major hold up is that a Toronto based company, ComWave, owns the rights to the name iPhone in Canada and is somehow trying to convince us that they might want to release a handheld with the same name. I guess they just need to be paid for beating Apple to securing the rights to the name.
The other major hold up comes from the fact that Rogers has invested a ton of money into 3G technology and they’re waiting for the iPhone to support all their new 3G services. The 3G iPhone will be awesome but it’s really getting me down that I can’t just buy an iPhone now regardless of the 3G.
If anyone has any other information on why the iPhone is taking so long to come to Canada we’d love to hear it. Until then I’m going to draw an Apple on my Blackberry and dream of better days.
