MobHappy has posted a story about a post on Cellular News stating that China’s subscribers have surpassed the US population.
China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile operator, has announced that their base of subscribers has grown to 301 million. The latest census from 2000 put the US population at 281 million. Julie Pohlig or Vital Wave Consulting gave a caveat, however:
“The image is striking — the equivalent of every man, woman and child in the U.S. using a cell phone,” she said. “But it’s important to understand that the per capita income of the Chinese subscribers is US$1,700, not US$44,000 as in the United States.”
Still, Pohlig says that Chinese spend on average 7% of their monthly income on phones, more than Americans.
