While we aren’t exactly rumor-mongers over here at Quicklybored, Think Secret has caught our attention with some speculation about an iPhone from Apple that could set mobile gaming on its ear.
Think Secret is known for a decent hit-miss ratio where Apple rumors are concerned, and they’ve got some speculation about the possibility of an iPhone from the Cupertino computer company that may end up on the market as soon as next week at the upcoming Macworld Expo in San Francisco.
Sources report that the iPhone will bs a GSM/EDGE (2.5G) phone and not a UMTS (3G) device. Apple’s decision to go with 2.5G lies in the technology’s advantages over 3G: physically smaller components and more reliable communication.Apple is also said to be courting as many GSM providers as possible across major markets in North America, Europe, and Asia in an attempt to maximize its initial opportunity in the mobile phone market. Sources say the iPhone’s price tag has been a particular point of discussion for Apple with providers, as the company would like to see the same price offered for the device across all carriers. In addition, Apple does not want to see carriers subsidize the cost of the iPhone to customers, bucking an industry trend.
What we can be sure of is that Apple’s designer, Jonathan Ive is a master of interface and simplicity, suggesting that gamers will enjoy better controls, more reliable hardware and -if the iPhone is true to Apple’s computer design- a high-quality display that could take mobile gaming to a much higher level of graphical excellence than it is now. Quickly Bored will be at the Macworld keynote from Steve Jobs next week to report on any iPhone-related news as it appears.
