Trip Hawkins is going to show us how to make licensed games

You can always trust the Mobile Games Blog to provide you with some inside dirt on the industry; you can always trust QuicklyBored to continue our love affair with Trip Hawkins.

Recently, Digital Chocolate announced the development of a game based around HBO Hit, The Sopranos, which is a little odd considering Trip and DC’s reputation of avoiding mobile licenses at all costs. Apparently, Arjan at the Mobile Games Blog thought it was odd as well, and called Trip on it. Check out his response after the jump.

Regarding the Sopranos, our focus will always be on making mobile a first-rate platform via original and innovative applications. Now that we are well-established it is possible for us to extend that approach. The right game engine with the right design and the right property license can also make for an innovative mobile experience, said Trip Hawkins, CEO of Digital Chocolate to the Mobile Games Blog.

We also care a great deal about our carrier partners, who often have exclusive marketing partnerships with major brands around which they want to create synergy with. When we can help out in a case like this, it supports and deepens our relationship with our channel customers. We are also helping to drive a trend in which the cost of these licenses comes down to something reasonable. That allows more money to remain in the mobile ecosystem and to be used on product development to make the best games.

Fairly bold words coming from His Tripness, but consider this: Digital Chocolate has shown that you can succeed financially in the mobile space with quality original IPs (something that even top-tier developer Glu is struggling with). If any company is going to show the industry how to make licensed mobile games without losing their shirt (after selling an arm and a leg to buy the damn license), it’ll probably be Digital Chocolate as well.
