Glu Launches Centipede

gluGlu has announced the impending launch of the classic arcade title, Centipede, owned by Atari Interactive, Inc. and licensed by Atari, Inc.

Centipede will be the first Atari retro title to launch through Glu’s new extended partnership with Atari, Inc. under which Glu will develop and publish some of the world’s most famous arcade classics to mobile. The mobile version of Centipede, which will launch in multiple regions around the world beginning in the first quarter of 2007, is in the final stages of development for mobile phones.

While the game play and graphics of Centipede capture the essence of the original game, Glu has incorporated 21st century elements including additional themes, power ups, and upgrades in graphics, control and functionality.

In a recent preview in which Centipede was given the “One to Watch” award, WGWorld.com said, “Given that arcade classics tend to do well on the download charts and that this one here maintains the core experience while seriously improving on the delivery, it should have HIT written all over it when (it) finally does come out.”

“Retro titles are incredibly popular on mobile because they’re simple to play, engaging and they have a nostalgic appeal, and we think Centipede is a great example of a classic title that is well suited for the mobile phone and the way people play mobile games,” said Jill Braff, general manager of the Americas, Glu Mobile. “We’re taking a different approach with our retro titles by incorporating the elements that made the original games successful and adding the quality of game play and graphics that today’s consumers expect.”

According to M:Metrics, in September 2006, in the US and Europe, 14% of mobile gamers bought a retro arcade game, and retro arcade games represented the 3rd most popular genre, behind only Puzzle and Casino.

“Glu’s approach to making retro games for the mobile phone is refreshing and will revitalize some of the most iconic video games in history,” said Nique Fajors, vice president, sales and marketing, Atari, Inc. “We’re confident that Centipede’s engaging original game play and mass consumer appeal combined with the unique approach by Glu’s talented studio will result in a mobile version of the legendary arcade classic that consumers will love.”

In addition to Centipede, Glu will be developing and publishing the Atari classics Asteroids and Super Breakout for mobile in 2007. For more information please visit www.glu.com.
