Bollywood Provides Great Mobile Content

BollywoodI found a great article by FE about Bollywood mobile games that are increasing revenues and growth in the industry.

Several game developers have entered into exclusive arrangements with celebrities to create and market games around them. Two months after Lage Raho Munnabhai hit the jackpot, Arshad Warsi is on a high: Spiel Studio has roped him for a mobile game created around him, while Paradox, a mobile game company signed in actor R Madhavan for the same. Sameera Reddy also has a game designed after her.

Only recently, the Mumbai studio-based industry has begun designing mobile games. Rang De Basanti, to Sarkar, and Home Delivery, are among the 60 movies that have been converted into mobile games. Bollywood has discovered a synergy with the mobile industry.

“Making games out of film content started with Sholay, which made it to the top of the download charts setting a new record in Bollywood content download with the game crossing the 150,000 downloads mark on GSM operators and 800,000 on CDMA phones,” says Rajiv Hiranandani of mobile2win. “Indians love movies and mobile companies have realised that it makes sense to tap Bollywood films for content,” chips in filmmaker Subhash Ghai.

“Mobile gaming in India is a Rs 70 crore market today and out of that Bollywood constitutes Rs 10 crore. The Bollywood segment is expected to touch Rs 30 crore in two years,” adds Hiranandani.

Downloading a Bollywood game costs anything from Rs 50 to Rs 150 per download, so the revenue module is becoming popular, according to Arun Gupta of mauj.com, a gaming company.

Typically, a movie gets 7,000-10,000 downloads with bigger movies getting over 25,000 downloads. “The industry’s potential is huge. As technology evolves, the format of the games will also evolve,” says Gupta. “These games can also be promoted overseas in countries which have substantial Indian population and Indian films have a huge market,” says filmmaker Farhan Akhtar.
