Moconews had a great post regarding an article from Telecomasia. According to the article, mobile games are likely to split into two industries — low cost casual games and high cost hardcore games, but carriers are losing interest, according to this article.
There’s also some stats from Juniper Research, which predicts that from 2006-2011 $54.6 billion will be generated from mobile games, both single priced downloads and subscription. Of this, Asia/Pacific will see 38%, Europe 31%, North America 22%, South America 5% and the rest of the world 4%.
Piracy is also becoming a problem, but possibly more for ease-of-use than price. “In Thailand, he says, a mobile user can easily get a load of mobile games for 10 baht in a shopping mall…”Mobile users may not aware that this is illegal, but for them, it’s more convenient to get the games, instead of going through difficult navigation and downloading process that required via mobile phones,” says Yung.”
From this statement, one can deduce that there seems to be some benefits to pirated mobile games. As Karl Woods would tell us, we just need to let them have a taste and then they’ll be hooked.
