Telephia Report

TelephiaAlthough this is not directly related to mobile gaming, the news is significant for the industry. A new report by Telephia, indicated that more than 34.6 million mobile subscribers accessed the Internet via their mobile phone in June 2006. Telephia’s Mobile Internet Report reveals that email and weather are the most popular mobile sites with more than 7.1 million visitors. In addition, more than 6 million mobile users accessed city maps/guides June.

The report also shows that Yahoo! Mail was the most popular visited site on mobile phones. Around 6 million mobile users accessed the Weather Channel via their mobile. ESPN did very well with more than 5.3 million hits.

In order to access these sites, mobile subscribers are using Openwave, Motorola and Nokia as their browser of choice. These browsers have the highest adoption rates with more than one-fourth of users selecting Openwave, 24 per cent using Motorola and 13 per cent using Nokia, mobile internet seems to be doing somewhat well.

According to Telephia, 81 percent of Internet consumers have phones with browsers that support xHTML-MP, which allows for an enhanced Internet browsing experience that is closer to what consumers are familiar with on their computers.

More individuals accessing the internet via their mobile phones demonstrates that the consumer is becoming more comfortable with the advanced features of their mobile phone. This tells me that it is only a matter of time until consumers become used to the idea of accessing the web, downloading games and content and generally using their mobile phone to the best of its capabilities.
