Super Happy Fun Fun, a mobile games company in Austin, Texas was featured in the American-Statesman yesterday. Mark Pierce of SHFF says the business can be tough for a small company. The firm is hoping to capitalize on new trends in mobile gaming.
“It isn’t an easy business to be in,” said Pierce. “It’s so new that the rules and technology are constantly changing. One year, games are played using the number pad as a control, the next year motion-sensors are in vogue. One year, phone games cannot be connected to the same game on the Internet, the next year they can…You try to come up with something that hooks people. Maybe this year it’s cargo pants. Maybe next year no one wants cargo pants. That’s really how it is.”
One of the games that Pierce is hoping will catch on is “3D Tilt-A-World.” To play, the user moves the phone to the left and the right and watches a tiny metallic ball on the screen move with it.
“So this is like a pinball game, right?” Pierce said. “The way it works is the camera. The camera senses the movement. This is a new thing, a novelty, and games always run on novelty.” Tilt-A-World is one of 13 games developed in the past three years by Super Happy Fun Fun.
In order to stay on top of tech and pop-culture trends, Pierce hires young people and plays games constantly. Perhaps Pierce should do a couple game reviews for QuicklyBored.
