Flash Lite and its Impact on Mobile Phones

Flash phoneToday’s open discussion on Arjan’s mobile games blog is about the introduction of Flash Lite to mobile phones. Flash Lite is the Flash technology designed for mobile phones and consumer electronics devices. Flash Lite dramatically accelerates the delivery of rich content and browsing, and customized user interfaces.

Macromedia promotes Flash Lite as being able to increase usability. A mobile phone using Flash Lite is said to imbue the device with intuitive navigation. Also, developers have a new opportunity to create engaging content and a great experience for end-users.

Flash has already served the mobile phone well with some of its innovative applications. Justin Everett-Church, veteran Flash developer, created the mobile application NYC Traffic. The application displays real-time images of major intersections in Manhattan and allows you to intuitively navigate the traffic webcams from your mobile device.

Flash Lite 1.1 is embedded into many NTT DoCoMo i-mode handsets and KDDI au handsets. The first handsets became available in Japan in May 2003. Go here to see a full list of Flash-enabled mobile devices.
Game developer Hudson, has already had great success with the technology. You can see a video of employees of Hudson discussing the benefits of Flash here.
