Text Games Coming to You

Text messaging is incredibly popular, more popular than mobile games. According to Jupiter Research, in the United States, about half of users are sending text messages, but only 5% are downloading a game. The obvious way to attempt to breach this gap is to combine both worlds: text messaging games.

Verizon has committed to creating “Pirates 2 Text-Ur-Adventure” game; an SMS-based choose-your-own-adventure game that has 562 unique messages and 20,736 different paths for the user to take.

The game has some unique features which include MMS messaging. The text messages will include songs, pictures, wallpaper and ring tones embedded into the text. Users can download the content which will add to their overall playing experience.

This new game type has some definite potential for users as well as the industry. Choose-your-own-adventures are a source of nostalgia here at QuicklyBored but how much is this going to cost? SMS plans can be expensive and if you’re playing a game with potentially 20,736 SMS messages at $0.15 each, this could end up being the most expensive mobile game in history.
