Karpov3D Vs Fritz

Karpov3D
Upon loading this game up on my Nokia 6670, the first thing I notice is that the menu is uber-confusing. There are these little graphics with the refresh/recylce arrows and corresponding icons that you need a Rosetta Stone to decypher (see screenshot). It took trial and error to figure it out and I’m still not sure what they all mean.

So I eventually got the game started on some settings that to the best of my knowledge were appropriate. Immediately you’ll notice that the pieces are very hard to differentiate. They are far too pixilated and moving the pieces around the board is difficult. Also, because the pieces are so pixilated, if you move a larger piece in front of a smaller one, the latter will be hidden and thus throw off your game. Overall, the graphics are a total failure.

On the other hand, the chess engine is great! Karpov beat Fritz in the first couple of rounds we played and he played like a champ. In the end, Karpov’s ELO rating was 2260 which is an astounding ‘Master’ level. Considering this is the best ELO so far, I am extremely disapointed that the graphics basically make this game unplayable.

So far we have had chess games that have either a great chess engine and poor gameplay or vice versa. There has not been a chess game that has had both. There are still a few more chess games left to be reviewed so it is possible that ‘the one’ will come.
