Sony Ericsson W600i Reviewed

Sony Ericsson W600i
It’s tough for mobile gamers when they’re looking for a new phone; most of the time, the newest and hottest phones aren’t that well-suited for getting your game on. A perfect example would be the Motorola RAZR: a sleek and stylish flip-phone that people have bought in droves, but no gamer worth their salt would buy due to its flimsy construction and terrible button design. To help out our fellow gamers, we here at QuicklyBored decided to start posting handset reviews of the devices out there best suited to mobile gaming (as well as telling you which ones to avoid). First up, Sony Ericsson’s W600i.

Vital Stats

Dimensions: 93 x 46.5 x 22.5 mm
Weight: 120 g
Memory: 256MB (no removable memory slot, however)
Screen: 176×220 TFT LCD screen, landscape and portrait viewing modes
Network: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and EDGE support
PAN Support: infrared and Bluetooth 2.0 with multiplayer support (no Bluetooth stereo headset support, however)
Music: Walkman media player
Camera: 1.3 megapixel
Controls: dedicated gaming buttons
Carriers: Cingular, Rogers

Now, we’re gaming enthusiasts at QuicklyBored, but we’re not crazy; we know that the most important decision in buying a new phone (even one used for gaming) is how it functions as a phone. In this regard, the W600i is a very solid with EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 and infrared support, a 1.3 megapixel camera and mp3 support that befits its Walkman namesake. The TFT LCD screen is a little smaller than we would have liked, but produces a bright and clean image (don’t let the photos we took tell you otherwise). Although slightly bulky, the W600i is a very solid mp3 phone.

However, maybe we are a little crazy, because the features on the W600i that get us most excited are the ones that make gaming on your mobile feel surprisingly easy. While the W600i screen is a little small, it also features a landscape mode, making it much more palatable for most gaming genres. Add to the mix a very responsive direction pad and two dedicated game buttons on the right-hand side of the screen and you essentially have a GameBoy Micro on the front of your phone. While support for this setup has to be written into the game, expect it to grow. The handset we tested already came with supported versions of Gauntlet and Worms. Toss in some added multiplayer support through the handset’s Bluetooth connection and you have a serious little gaming machine.

The Sony Ericsson W600i is essentially a solid phone that does a little bit of everything and provides a great gaming experience due to its landscape screen and intuitive control scheme. Definitely worth a look.
