I’m not crazy about the idea of an RPG on a mobile phone, but Final Fantasy is such an amazing series that it can’t go wrong. Considering FF7 took me about 70-80 hours to complete, I’m going to have to buy a six-pack of new batteries for my phone if I’m going to get through a decent FF for mobile.
Recently, Kosei Ito has been heading up the mobile division of Square Enix, the producers of the Final Fantasy franchise. Square Enix is poised to make a big splash in the North American mobile game market with the upcoming releases of FF: Before Crisis.
In a recent interview with Gamasutra, Kosei Ito discusses the development of more mobile FF games such as FF Agito XIII and the Dirge of Cerberus, a port of the PS2 action RPG based on the FFVII character Vincent Valentine. With regards to why Square Enix considers mobile gaming important, Ito says:
Mobile has a lot of casual gamers who don’t necessarily play console games, and who aren’t Final Fantasy fans. So mobile allows us to target a different market as well as introduce them to the Final Fantasy series.
Ito also shed some light on his views concerning the mobile gaming platform:
I actually like mobile the most. The platform is still changing on mobile. It’s getting better and progressing. The 3G handset spec is limited, so we had to concentrate on quality… for the game.
