Punk ass kids redux

Kids
Maybe catering mobile content to kids isn’t such a good idea…

Yesterday I posted commentary on Kristian Segerstrale’s interview with MobileIndustry.biz, saying that Glu Mobile’s interest in really understanding the mobile demographic (i.e. mostly kids, almost equally boys and girls) would lead to more games catered to that demographic and less console ports.

I thought this was most likely a good thing until I ran across an ad for a mobile game based upon MTV Europe’s Dirty Sanchez. Near as I can tell, the show is some sort of UK Jackass, where Limey’s sit around in a bar, drink, and punch each other in the face. The game itself is apparently a collection of minigames that you play with a group of friends; the losers have to commit obscene acts in effigy of their loutish heroes.

Girls Like Mobile Games in the UK

Girls gaming
Glu Mobile’s EMEA managing director, Kristian Segerstrale, talked to MobileIndustry.biz recently about the results of an in-depth study published by his company on the mobile industry. While he starts off with the usual blah blah blah about the industry’s exponential growth, things get interesting when he debunks some pretty standard mobile gaming assumptions… or at least debunks them for the UK (but the UK scene is way more interesting than here, so we’ll let it slide).

Tony VS Casual Games: A Labor of Love

Girl gamer
Will you be my Bejewel?

Poor Tony. First we make him take on Matthew Broderick and the coming robot overlords, and now this. So we couldn’t help but ask him to document his mission to use the casual games he loves so much to help him find that special someone. His weapon of choice: Bejeweled.

Thoughts about developer burnout and some genre musing

John Carmack’s recent interview with MobileIndustry.biz has sparked my old robautomated thinking unit to consider the appeal of the mobile game industry to veteran developers (I know, it felt funny writing it, too). Check it out.

Canadian Halo 2 Hero Comes Home With Medal

The final post from Nelson Triana, aka G-Sp0t, about his experiences at the World Cyber Games finals in Singapore has recovered from its New Years hangover and has arrived at QuicklyBored’s doorstep to bring in 2K6 with a bang. This post focuses on detailing Team Canada’s electrifying final matches that lead to a silver medal and all the rice and noodles they could eat. G-Sp0t’s next post will get back to what we pay* him for (documenting the state of mobile gaming from the perspective of a professional gamer), but for now, sit back and enjoy stories about our boy’s journey to kick ass and foster good will with gamers from around the globe. Except for the Aussies. Man, does he ever hate the Aussies.
