Virgin Mobile UK to Trial Ki-Bi Cards

Virgin Mobile

Globes [online] is reporting that Virgin Mobile UK will trial Ki-Bi Mobile Technologies ‘mobile content cards’ after the holidays. To download the content, users simply place the card up to their phone and press a button corresponding to the content they wish to download. The card then emits an acoustic tone which triggers the phone to download the desired content from Ki-Bi’s server.

QuicklyBored had a chance to test Ki-Bi’s cards at the JavaOne Conference this past summer in San Francisco. They’re a pretty quick and painless way to get games on your phone, and hopefully they’ll be a successful retail solution for developers to get their content out without having to worry about any sort of carrier control. However, the acoustic tones range from finger-snapping catchy to mind-hemorrhagingly repetitive depending on how many times you’ve heard it. For a good laugh, email Tony and ask him about the time he lined about 20 cards up like dominoes and set them off. Sometimes he still wakes up in the middle of the night screaming…

Update: Apparently these things are now in Canada, being distributed by SilverBirch Studios at all ‘The Source’ (formerly RadioShack) locations. Go check it out.
